Well, I'm glad that Taylor is out, but Hause?  Eeeeeeeek. Oh well, he has to be better than his last outing, otherwise you'd have to actually ask if he's another cousin of George Weah.

Surely Hause is better than Taylor? Hourihane needs to step up a bit aswell.

To be fair, we did see him play 20 minutes at Wigan, after 3 games in 18 months and in a desperate team performance, so naturally we should write him off.

Has anybody written him off?  Or just correctly stated that his was the worst debut in living memory?

Id much rather Green be given a run out from the start than Adomah who looks finished.

Yes, Adomah back in is a strange one, although he does at least provide a bit of cover on his side.  Can't help but feel that El Ghazi and Adomah is a monumentally ineffective wing attack at the moment though.

You didnt mention his debut. You made an odd sort of mouse noise, which it seems reasonable to interpret as lack of confidence in his selection, based on a really small sample size.

How about a post like this.....

Thank f**k Dean has seen what we all see, that Taylor is at best a liability, and he's trying something else. Good Luck Kortney, show us what you're really made of. Come on Villa....

Before the European Cup Final, you'd have been the one saying ...."That Morley to Withe axis never looks good, and I wish we'd got some goalkeeping experience on the bench, that could cost us big style".

Got an uneasy feeling about this one.  It's got a lot of the ingredients for us to be rubbish - Brentford, live on SKY, immobile looking team selection.  Hopefully build on the last ten minutes on Friday and make a quick start.

It's the players Risso. It doesn't matter what he shows them or how they train they simply cannot do it. They are too old, too slow and too shit to carry out those instructions. And if you want proof then watch how Brentford play. That is Dean Smith's team just as much as ours is Steve Bruce's.

Maybe it is just my eyes but there appears to be a bit of a kit clash. Weren't there rules a while back that basically it had to be a combination of light and dark team kits to make them easier to distinguish from each other? And no, I am not going back as far as the old days of black and white TV's.

I said the same earlier Damo.  Really annoying set of kits.  Although Brentford don't make it easy with stripes on the front and a solid colour on the back.

To be fair, we did see him play 20 minutes at Wigan, after 3 games in 18 months and in a desperate team performance, so naturally we should write him off.

Has anybody written him off?  Or just correctly stated that his was the worst debut in living memory?
Obviously didn't see  Ugo Ehigou's debut against Norwich..

Yes baffling given the rumours of what a great tactition he is

Not very good.

Defence do look better, but Hause looks more like a centre back than a left back. Would consider swapping him and Mings.

Midfield is shockingly poor, and the Wingers are lazy.

Still, we are not losing and despite dominating Brentford have not really looked like scoring. Figers crossed we have a better second half.

Twice on counters I saw Albert and Conor barely breaking forward to join attack

Yes to be fair. We've created the only decent opportunity of the game.

But with McGinn's decision making way off, our midfield slow off the ball, deep, slow to move the ball on and the every anonymous Hourihane and Adomah, it's more by luck than design.

He was meant to be able to do both with CB being his primary position. He can't bloody control a football, has trouble with balance and is being caught out of position. I get that there might be some improvement on those fronts at CB but the drop off at LB shouldn't be that steep.

Personally I just thought that was a shit half of football all round. They kept a lot of possession without really doing much with it, we were so deep that we had no options to play the ball out. That said we had the best chance and Adomah will be gutted he missed it. We've been awful going forward though and it'd have been daylight robbery had he put it away.

We need pace and energy in there to counteract teams that try to blitz us or this type of performance will keep happening because it's just too easy for teams to do to us.

He's probably due one of his great free kicks soon to remind us how good he is.

He should be working for MI5, not playing for us.

Actually, maybe he is?

Well let's hope so seeing as the bloke who helped create it is now with us. We are lumbered with dinosaur players and you can see what inventive coaching and player acquisition can look like. Smith needs to ensure he doesn't fall into the trap of having to buy players of a certain price or type because he now is at a bigger club with a bigger budget. Brentford is proof it can be done on a much smaller financial plan.

I can see why Kodjia wants to get out if he can't get a game when we need a goal.
Too lazy, doesn’t track back

I want him up front and the midfield and defenders to look after that. I get forwards have a defensive responsibility but the main reason they are on is to score goals.

McGinn has been awful tonight.  Not for want of effort, but still, really bad game for him.

It has been possibly his worst game for us, but I have some sympathy given what he has to work with. If you're a Brentford player and you make a run just about anywhere on the pitch you have at least two or three teammates to pass to. If a Villa player makes a fifteen yard run the other players use it as an excuse to get their breath back and have a bit of a point.

Ah so it is a contact sport after all? e didn;t swing a leg and he barely touched him.  Abraham could have stayed on his feet and played the ball, he chose to go down.  Many refs fall for it, some don't.  But it's not in the laws of the game as far as I am aware that mere contact equals a foul.   It's thinking like yours that  is ruining the game.  It leads to players going down at the merest touch and  worse all this "initiating contact" by forwards before they throw themselves to the ground.  Like that Swansea "penalty" against Whelan in the Cup.  Sure there was contact but only because the Swansea forward threw himself into Whelan's path.  It's bollocks

Waiting until 31st January to sign a midfielder, and then signing one who has been injured all season, was absolutely fucking stupid and could end up costing Smith his job.
That's a ridiculous thing to say. Do you think that's how it works? It's widely known that we have a whole network of people tasked with improving the squad. It's not Sunday league football.

Made a mug of both centre halves . Season over.

I don’t think you can blame the centre halves today to be honest. It’s that useless powderpuff midfield that’s the problem and the lack of any threat
Agreed only so long you can hold out. McGinn aside midfield is awful.

Totally, ineffective midfield, ineffective team.

With the loan players we are going to lose and with the exception of Grealish, Kallinic, and McGinn, I am really struggling to convince my self that ANY of the fuckers in that squad tonight should still be here next season.

Dean Smith looks stunned.  He also looks massively out of his depth.

I can't help hearing a sense of smugness there.....or is that just me?

So, you agree with his points, but think he's enjoying Smith looking massively out of his depth?

I think it's just you.

I would rather we just play the kids for the rest of the season than watching that shower of shit.

ok.....Smith out then.... pretty much done with this forum on a match day now. Maybe I'm in a minority but I want to feel some Villa love and support, not this constant negativity. Just makes it all worse. See you all at Wembley for the playoff final - #stillbelievetillmathematicallyimpossibelbecauseitjustmakesmefeelbetter

Can't disagree with that.
I'd be disappointed if any of them were still here.

Agree.  We have some real dross on our books. Sloppy Dross with no sense of urgency. Our players are not of the required standard.

Too many old players. We need a younger fitter squad. Dean needs time to build his own squad.

Towards the end of the ninety minutes I was getting ready to post how we had been second best but at least our keeper had a good game and kept a clean sheet.

Very worrying since Christmas, the last 2 games have really been disappointing - I enjoyed the come back on Friday, but we had played shocking all night, followed by tonight. Think you have to give Smth a pre season and transfer window, but I think its fair to ask some questions of him, its a shocking run against mainly teams lower than us in the table. Thought Andre green has been really poor in the last 2 performances, delivery again tonigt very poor... Season over

Good point. Everyone was saying we had the best squad in the league a while back. As you say wtf happened?

If Hourihane had scored we would have won.
Whatever else you say that's true.

A poor player is a poor player.  There is nothing the manager can do about that.  We have poor players who are lazy, unmotivated and ungenuine.  The manager can do something about that.  It is what managers are paid to do.

He successfully managed one championship side enough to attract our attentions, and now he's managing another championship side, where's the big step up in that?
