Title: Everton vs Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Dave on October 18, 2014, 01:59:57 PM
Guzan, Hutton, Vlaar (c), Baker, Cissokho, Westwood, Cleverley, Richardson, N’Zogbia, Agbonlahor, Benteke.

Decent side. Good to see Benteke starting and Ron back. I assume we'll have a midfield three. Glad to see we've got Zogbia in the side as it's a little more adventurous than sticking with Weimann, who works very hard but is all huff and puff. Zoggy will hopefully provide some spark.

No Grealish either. It might be me but I don't consider Okore missing any kind of real mystery or conspiracy. He has to work his way into the side like everyone else, and Clark is left sided which adds balance. If Baker goes down then he's a natural fit with Lowton also on the bench.

Looks like we will give it a go then.

I am wondering if Okore's issues are outside football?
We will probably never know...

I wonder if Okore is 21 and has missed a whole season of football and has never really played premier league football?

Why N'Zogbia keeps getting selected, I have no idea.

Does he 'keep getting selected'? Isn't this his second start since August?
Title: Re: Everton vs Aston Villa Match Thread

N'zogbia is an enfuriating inconsistent player. But he's the only player we've got who can dribble, and has much better quality than Weimann. I thought he was responsible for our brightest attacking moments in the last game. Baines hasn't been in great form and I see it as an attacking move

Thank goodness Baines doesn't like to attack otherwise we'd need N'Zogbia to track back and as he can only jog we'd be in trouble. On a positive note, I'm sure he'll find a corner of Goodison unknown to man or beast. Maybe he can plant a Villa flag there.

One of the mid 3 needs to push up a bit and try and instigate play a bit, and we need Gabby and Zog to attack their fullbacks a bit. We're so rigid (as normal). Always seems to be the most obvious pass we go far (and often balls up). We're way too obvious.

I'd take Richardson off at HT and bring on Cole. Switch to a 4-2-3-1 and try and play some football. Zog has been dire, but there's always a chance with him that he'll make something happen. It would help if he was push wider. Baines has had it so easy he may as well be reclined on a sofa getting fed grapes by Lambert and Keane FFS.

Everton have controlled this half effortlessly. Committed in the 50/50's; crisp, purposeful passing; not letting us anywhere near the ball; their defence has been well organised and determined.

Villa had a couple of good passages of forward play but it was too slow, allowing Everton time to get men back in defence, win the ball and break away again. It's been a bad performance so far from back to front, Hutton being the only one to come out of that half with any credit.

We've looked ok going forward but invite too much pressure by gifting Everton the ball. This would be fine if we were making incisive counter-attacking moves but we aren't; they've been far too slow. We have had a couple of decent patches of play and won three corners, the last of which Benteke was a hairs breadth away from getting his head on. Overall though it's been far too easy for Everton who look way more organised and composed than we do.

We're on game number five of a five game run against last year's top five. We're missing our best player and have just had what many people would argue are the other two most important players back from injury - one long term. Whilst I'm not saying we've been Brazil 1970, there's been some glimpses of nice football, especially around the 30 minute mark. We can all tell Lambert to piss off and bemoan the lack of creativity all we like, but Everton are ahead of us at the moment and losing 1-0 to them is no shame.

Obviously I'd prefer it if we did a better job of defending against Baines - it's hardly as if he's an unknown quality.

I think our fundamental problem is that the squad isn't very good and the manager sends eleven of them out there who somehow combine to look less than the sum of the parts

I can't believe Lerner was happy enough with that to give him a new four year contract. Mind boggling.

We defend slightly better in spells but other than that we look every bit as hopeless as we have for three years now.

Can't keep the ball, can't pass, can't create chances.

Grim.

None of our midfielders ever make a run beyond the opposition defence. Everything we do is in front of them, so unless we get it absolutely perfect it's piss easy to defend against. I struggle to see the point of any of our midfielders. Ok, so they get the ball, they pass it, they run around a bit. But they offer next to nothing in the final third. Cissokho and Hutton look miles more dangerous than any of them.

Fucking garbage but predictable

They need a win so no doubts it will be against us. They'll probably score early, go 0-2 up after the break, we'll pull one back around 74th minute mark and that will be that.

You've just got to laugh really.

Everyone knows N'Zogbia plays mainly with his head down. That year when he looked quite decent at Wigan, he played almost as a striker at times. He wasn't playing from deep, he was there to get on the end of passes and drive into the box, commit a defender, score goals. He should be on the shoulder of the defender, not sitting on the halfway line.

Cross into the box there from about 30 yards out on the wing, Benteke the only Villa player in the box, surrounded by three Everton players. We've ran out of ideas going forward and when Everton get the ball they're winding down the clock, or letting us have the ball in places where they know we can't hurt them.

That was absolute garbage from Zog.

I appreciate they're better than us, so were our last three opponents, but I don't think that means we can just shrug off what is currently 10-0 over 3 and a half games, and barely a shot on target in that time.

We just don't seem to have a go in too many matches. Everton are a better team than us, yes, but they've struggled a bit recently, haven't been scoring, and it's surely not unreasonable to think we might look at least competent against them?

I think that the inclusion of Cleverley has added an ability to add good balls in the box as seen against Arsenal before it all went tits up. We haven't been scoring, but Benteke is back and he's been missing big time. I'd be surprised if we finished below 13th this season.

Not sure what's worse - the game or the nonsense negativity on here. We have had a decent start to the season, lost to three teams guaranteed to be in top 4, and granted are playing poorly today.

Hardly the end of the world.
And there it is again. I glad someone keeps remind me that we should accept that we can't play out with the big boys but should look forward to playing the with the shit ones.

Just reality, is all. If you want to change that, find us the hundreds of millions that will allow us to change that reality

We should have been far more adventurous against Everton today. They've been poor this season. We've made it so easy for them. That's not good enough. And I don't care who the opposition is, if you lose four on the spin without looking remotely close to competing or scoring in any of the games, then it's hard to recover from. We've been utterly hapless for four games, irrespective of the opposition and it's now loaded us with immense pressure to beat QPR because there's 3 more tough games to follow the R's.
For anyone not bricking it. Congratulations, you've got a stronger stomach than me.

The thing is, if we had a situation vacant at the moment, I think Moyes would come here and he'd improve us a lot. I think he's had a good break and recovered somewhat from Utd, and obviously, LVG's struggles will have helped him.

However I expect Randy to hold off till the bitter end. Particularly now as sacking Lambert would mean a payoff on a four year contract.

Maybe there's a clause in our favour. Something like 'Six months money if we sack you for continuing to be unspeakably shit'.

We haven't expected an easy win, but we could at least expect our side to try and have a go and exploit what have been glaring weaknesses for Everton this season. We've sat back and given them probably the easiest game they'll have all season.

I don't know about playing the shit teams, but every year, the list of teams we can't compete with seems to get longer.

Come on Paulie, we're hardly playing the world's shittest teams at the moment are we? I don't even think our team looks bewlidered or lacking confidence as it has often in the last couple of years. We're better than we've been in the last couple of years too.
And yet still on the verge of another friggin defeat and another friggin shit record.

...against a team that's finished above for how many seasons in a row now?

A team that also got key players back today in Barkley and Coleman

So did we.

To be fair to Richardson Gabby gave him the ball then just wandered past him - no threatening run or option whatsoever

Joe Cole lives!

I doubt anybody, 'Lambert hater' or not is rejoicing this scoreline. I like the phrase, 'Lambert hater.' It conjures images of people burning effigies and sticking pins into Lambert Corinthian figures each night.

Shit game but cheers for making me laugh mate.

The funniest thing on this forum is a lot of people seem surprised about individual players, their lack of quality and the way we play...where have you all been for the last 5 years?
In a persistent state of denial, trying to instantly repress the memory of over three quarters of the matches I've just witnessed.

The thing that worries me is not so much that we're losing, it is the way we've lost. Everton have basically coasted, we've done next to nothing to threaten them.

What the fuck was that, Richardson? A lofted chip straight at Howard.
We had the ball in our possession for a fairly long time, it was long over due to go back to Everton. Richardson was merely obliging.

We've been in decline, short of three-four seasons of mega-spending, since we lost the 2000 FA Cup Final.

Basically, we've accepted (and I mean the club, not the fans) that this is where we are, and this is how it is going to be.

Absolutely zero fight today. None at all. That's a concern.

Cissokho's crossing has been the real highlight of the match for me.

There was one, ten minutes ago, when he got into a decent position, well wide, and swung a cross in which bent around in an arc and narrowly missed Hutton on the other side of the pitch.

It's not the losing. It's the manner of the capitulation. The one-dimensional, utterly predictable tactics. The inadequate ball-retention. The absence of flair or creativity. The lack of goals from midfield. Actually, the lack of goals full stop. The paucity of movement. The inability of the players to control the ball and find a teammate with straightforward passes. The...

Ah fuck it. I can't be bothered.

Fair play to Koeman and the Southampton board. Sold a bunch of players for stupid money, bought some good ones, brought in a manager that kept the football playing side of the club and now they are sitting pretty at the right end of the table. Oh and they have scored more today than we have all season.

There is losing, and there's losing so limply, though.

It isn't about results when you play the likes of Chelsea or Man City, it is also about the way you play, and we've shipped 11 for no reply in four matches and managed barely a shot on goal.

I don't think we're a laughing stock (although the contract award was nuts), we're just not a very good football team, and after some good results early on, we're starting to see some pretty stark reminders of how we've played for three or four years now.

I thought they might struggle, but they've been very good. I think they'll be ahead of Everton by the end of the season. Some of their signings look inspired and they sold sensibly as well. Got absolute top dollar.
What they've done shouldn't be beyond us. We just need some astute management at the club, from up on high, down to the dressing room.

We could start with playing a different brand of football and at PL not constantly giving the ball to the opposition. I fucking hate watching it and I have no idea why a professional football manager cannot see that it simply does not work.

Ok I only watch from the comforts of home and I'm bit spending my hard earned money to do so but it's still hard to watch and to take. I still generally believe Lambert can turn it around this season.

About 30,00 Evertonians will be thats for sure - most Evertonians I spoke with this week were expecting a very tough game today - we cant even get a shot on target against anyone we play at home or away- that is laughingly embarassing.

We may have played "better" teams over the last few games but at least give it a fucking go !! We surrender before we get over the white line.
For me Lambert ranks up there as one of the worst managers we have had over the last 50 years and Christ we have had a few bad ones.
