4-4-2 - Bennett and Alby on the wings?

So is that Bennett in midfield? And baker ahead of Clark?

That team looks shit, I have to say.

Clark dropped and Baker kept? weird. Haven't seen 4-4-2 for a while, I do worry that we chop and change formation too much but I am delighted to see Vlaar back. Come on Villa we need a win.

I think we've got a set up that works away from home - the 433 or 4312

I'm not sure why we've changed it here. I think we'll be reliant on the front two today
Title: Re: Cardiff City v Aston Villa Match Thread

I've often thought last season that Bennett should be given a try on the left side of midfield so will be interesting to see how he does .

I'm hoping Bennett, because we'll need Betrand covering Baker. I actually think Bennett is useful going forward, so maybe midfield might be a better role for him. Albrighton needs to follow up his performance from Saturday and everyone else needs to be a fuck load better.

I've often thought last season that Bennett should be given a try on the left side of midfield so will be interesting to see how he does .
I have also wanted too see how that would work out, as he is good on the ball. Maybe it will not work, but then at least it has been tried. But will it be Bertrand in midfield instead, perhaps ? I would prefer Bennett in midfield, but lets see.

Not saying he's the saviour but can he be any worse than any of our current central midfield options (apart from Delph, obviously)?

I think Mr Lowton's days are numbered.

A bit risky not to have him on the bench, but maybe Lowton has an injury ? I could not imagine Holt, Weimann and Helenius all being used as subs, so why 3 strikers ? But Lowton really has been disappointing lately, so perhaps rather Sylla as a makeshift rigth back, if needed. And rather see Helenius than Holt, but that is a different story...

In other good news, Lambo is taking the squad to Spain for a warm weather training break after tonight. This time last year, they needed that but did not get it, seemingly because the club would not fund it.

I don't believe for a second that the club wouldn't fund it - more likely the manager didnt  suggest it.

It's when you look at that line up, you realise how unlikely pre season predictions that we might compete with the likes of Newcastle, Everton and even Southampton are.

Still could win this one though. I'm just very surprised baker is in - though Clark has been off colour of late I think baker has been worse. Perhaps it's all about kenwynne jones

I normally think we'll finish top six for about a week and a half, then top eight for the next couple of months, then top twelve for a few weeks after that, then we'll be relegated for sure during Christmas and a month or two after, and end up thinking that there are, after all, thank god, three teams worse than us in the league

We've played a straight 442 a few times under lambert and every time has been awful as far as I can remember. Though it looked good twice when we changed to 442 v west ham.

But our away formation was working. We played brilliantly v Liverpool and then have played a different way in the subsequent two away games. And played the same way at home v west ham when it always looked likely to be the wrong choice

I just don't get it. Feel free to rub my nose in it if I've got this wrong by the end of the game!

Agree, Bennett will be a good player in the future. Froggy on WM tonight said he thinks Bennett will end up as a winger with his pace and crossing ability. Richard Sneekes really rates him too. I tend to listen to ex-pros more than opinions on here. They've played at professional level.

It's the wide players running across our midfield that's causing us problems. And the fact they want the loose balls more

Our defence looks very square, except when baker is three yards behind vlaar.

It is hard to see what Bennett is going to provide that Weimann couldn't, unless he's going to get a good cross into the box. He is definitely capable of that, but we'll need to get him in the right positions
Title: Re: Cardiff City v Aston Villa Match Thread

We're playing like villa used to under mon. But we don't generally have the players we did then.

We could win this if we get the breaks, but i think it is dependent on getting the breaks. Our shape looks very wonky. We seem to have two left backs in the side but a massive gap there half the time

sometimes when I play games, I deliberately "hobble" myself to make things more of a challenge.  Play call of duty just using a shotgun, play single handed backhands only in tennis, try and only score from headers on FIFA etc.

I think Lambert picks Baker for a similar reason.

KEA for Bennett for me. 433 or 4312. Let's get a grip in midfield. Let's close them down better. Let's not leave bacuna one v one against zaha
We know we've got real problems if the answer is KEA!

The 442 isn't working. It was to begin with

A goal is coming here isn't it? We need to change the pattern of the game. Shuffling it wide for Alby to float a cross in from half way through their half every five minutes isn't working. And gabby and benteke aren't holding it up well enough

We look like a fucking pinball machine. Every time the ball touches one of us it flies off at pace at an angle you couldn't have predicted.

There is no game plan here. I guarantee if you put a 1st division side out there tonight there still would be more shape to their game and at least the tiniest idea of what each player is expected to do.

Our 11 look headless.

We need a leader. Even if we go on to win tonight, this and this whole 20 months reign has been shambolic.

Decent 5 minutes at the start followed by more turgid, directionless, dross.  Lucky to go in 0-0 against the bottom of the league.

Lambert needs to change the formation, take Benett off and replace him with Weimann and hope we get a couple on the break.

OGS has sussed Lamberts tactics out and we're too predictable. We don't have any intuitive player to open them up. Tekkers and Gabby are shackled most of the time.

We look more likely to concede than score.

I've only just got in, I thought it was on SKY and was in two minds about watching it. Reading the reviews here plus the fact I haven't got BT Sport has made my mind up for me thank God.

Poor, very poor. So much bad decision making going on out there, there's been so many options for a good pass or through ball and every time it just gets pinged backwards instead. I have to think this is more because of the tactics and coaching by Lambert and co rather than the players. Good to see we are playing with a bit of width today, but does everything have to go down the f'ing wing, we've had a few through balls available with Gabby or Benteke  sat on the last man, and then pinged it out to the wing. Can't we vary our play.

Benteke has had a couple of chances and should have done better.

Our central midfield is not good enough to go with just 2 against any team in this league. Get 3 in there asap.

Which was of course to concede two in as many minutes...  Can see that happening again!

we are the only team who can make Kenny Jones look like Drogba

We actually are, arent we ! And Noone and Zaha are Robben and Ribery. Well, not quite, but why are we always so far away from the opponent with the ball ? Bacuna should be more aggressive against Zaha, too often he lets him control the ball. And why do they win every loose ball ? It is as if our players do not anticipate where the ball will be end, or do not believe they can win it. That is not acceptable. Gabby has been really poor and the hoofing to Benteke does not work at all. Pass the ball and let Albrighton hit crosses, some of them have been quite decent, especially the last one.

But I think we should switch to 4-3-3 and put Gabby on the left, then try Bennett as left midfield/winger in another game later.

Oh, and we keep giving the ball away at throw-ins as always..

I'm a Westwood fan but he's been very poor again this match. Not that he's helped out at all in any way by our Stone Age tactics and set-up.

Oh please! He plays like this every single game! He's an appalling footballer who is out of his depth in the PL.

I thought he was our best player last Saturday - at least passing the ball and not hiding...

His forte - sideways and backward passing. He is NOT a PL footballer.

Exactly hence why we usually play 3 there. No decent supply to forwards Benteke either gets the ball deep or on his head compare that to service Jones is getting...

So frustrating and frankly looking at us we are most definitely candidates to go down

Arguably the finest training facilities in the country, and this is the result of all that lavish expense. A team with no composure, no quality and no guts. Even this team are better than this. Lambert, sort it out or do the right thing, admit you're out of your depth, and walk.

We definitely need to get three in the middle. That could be Weimann playing behind benteke with gabby wide, or it could be kea. But it needs to be one of them cos Cardiff have been a fair bit better than us

Why oh why oh why can't we try and get a consistent shape to our play? It really can't help with the passing not to have that automatic feel for where your teammates are

We all hope the experiment would succeed but the sad fact is that right now we've got far too many players who aren't good enough to pull on the claret and blue of Villa. In fact a lot aren't good enough to put on the claret and blue of Burnley. Some of these players are just incredibly poor. In addition we've got a manager who just isn't and never, ever, will be Villa level. The only way Lambert and some of these players will ever be good enough for Villa is if we become a Championship club, which would appear to be Lerners Baldrickesque, cunning plan.

I'm struggling to understand why we are so poor tonight.
We know we can't break down teams who park the bus, like West Ham on Saturday, but Cardiff are coming onto us, leaving space and gaps all over the place.
But we can't/ don't know how to exploit that.
I think it boils down to the fact that we just do not have any quality in the team.
Yes, there is effort but there is a massive void when it comes to quality.

You have to sympathise with Lerner: not since ITV forked out all that money for Friends Reunited just before Facebook took off has so much been laid out for so little return.

But sympathies aside, I wish he'd do one.
I don't care who we bring in as manager as long as we have this owner we will struggle.  We have been on a downward spiral for years and that is the fault of Randy.

I like the way alby is playing, though this match has been a bit of a microcosm of his career

Start really well, full of pace and enthusiasm, then get found out a bit and start running into blind alleys because there's not enough variety to his game.

Bacuna should have crossed there. Better half though, no question. But Bennett still doing nowt

Coaching for a multi million pound salary means waving your hands palms up shouting Come On. In a padded jacket. To whom should I send my CV and covering letter?

Do you think FIFA experience would help? I've won the quadruple on world class...

Certainly. Lambo does not even know any 4 syllable words.
