Fairly  happy with that side , Lowton back in and bacuna and sylla in midfield it seems - would have preferred tonev rather than kea but that aside its a decent selection.

That team looks like one of two things to me. Either bacuna pushed right of a fwd three, baker at left back. Or 532 with Lowton at left wing back, which I think might look a bit odd.

It doesn't look like it has many goals in it other than benteke / Weimann.

Let's hope Lowton is somewhere close to the excellence at the back end of last season

Midfield looks very average indeed to me, without Delph. Very average.

Not expecting a great game here to be honest. We could do with the  athleticism we're missing.

Please don't spoil my Saturday again villa.

Nice to see sylla get a start - interesting see how Lowton does on his return with bacuna further forward .

I'd assume 433 with bacuna on the wing. There's no left sided midfielder so I can't see it being 442. If we're going to get a win here I think it'll have to be a scrap, and possibly 1-0. Can't see too much creative quality in that side.

Why pick Tonev last week, when he did well, yet push Bacuna forward this? More defensive beef, I suppose, as they have Jarvis & Downing on the wings.

A real pity about Delph missing out. We need a strong presence to combat Nolan and Noble.
Good to see Lowton back in. Him and Bacuna can hopefully link-up to good effect as our midfield doesn't have much in the way of creativity.
I would prefer to see Clark rather than Baker at left-back. Though without an out and out striker like Carroll or Cole, I guess  we shouldn't get bullied too much aerially (Nolan may do a number on Clacker though).

Shit, no Delph is a massive blow.. hopefully Bacuna being a further forward can make up for that. We need someone in the midfield areas being positive and forward thinking.

Tonev was average at best last week. Delph is a massive loss. Wemann and Benteke have got to perform at the same level at the end of last season to win this. All 5 Sky Sports soccer pundits gone for a Villa win ........

I was at the game last week and honestly I don't think you can say that Tonev was any worse than the rest of them. Awful to a man, Weimann Westwood and Gabby particularly, but obviously Gab was carrying a knock.

I wish we had some more players who actually wanted to be on the ball, and were confident and good when they have it. Even Andi & Gabby, our usual two wide outlets, are limited with the ball.

Andi proving already he needs to be dropped. Should have scored two.

We've barely been out of our own half, we appear not to have bothered  with a midfield today, too.

We'll string two passes together and the third will invariably be a 50-50 ball, at best, most of which fall to them.

It has been like that for a few weeks now, and doesn't look like it is getting better any time soon.

HT Analysis : Absolute garbage!

Positives:

a clean sheet and maybe the back three playing ok

Negatives:

We're supposed to be playing a 3-5-2 against a side that are having to field Kevin Nolan up front ... not only that but the back 3 are actually a back 5 with another 3 sat right on top of them. Thus you could fit the QE2 lengthwise in the gap between our so called midfield and attack

We can't keep the ball when its hoofed up field as there's nobody anywhere near Weimann/Benteke, which is playing right into West Ham's hands as they've got nothing to defend against. We've had a couple of scrappy efforts (both on the counter surprise surprise) but apart from that ...

If there is a more ineffective/ill equipped midfield three playing in the Premiership this afternoon i'd be amazed, at one point about 10 minutes from HT all three of the plonkers were within a radius of about 5 feet of each other in the centre as West Ham had the complete freedom of the rest of the middle third of the pitch

Fucking painful viewing

Villa are creating very little, unable to retain the ball, and clearly have no plan other than a long ball. Benteke has had no service and Weimann is working hard but he's not a natural finisher.

Hate to say it, but Wet Spam are playing better football than Villa. Lambert needs to change something for the second half. For a team who spent a lot of money on forwards, they aren't delivering much, how long since we scored a goal?

One has to hope that somebody who has played at the top level and appears as competitive as you would want in your manager is just as frustrated with his players as we are watching them. He's never going to blast them publicly which is a good thing, but he's giving it to them behind closed doors. Yes, he needs more time. Off course, but this is a backward step this season in terms of creativity even though as a unit we look more solid than last season.

Not watching the game. How is our formation faring against their 460. I have to say it seems a very strange way to play. Three centre backs against no centre fwd. two wing backs against their wingers who can presumably afford to play right up the pitch and stay there with all that cover in midfield.

Not sure how to change it though. None of our bench options have convinced up to now. Maybe switch to 433 but maybe the one good thing so far is our defensive aerial dominance w the three centre backs?

I don't like this constant changing of formation. I don't think it can help the cohesiveness of our play.

I expected us to be a pleasing on the eye passing side this season. We've really not seen that at all.

We do look a lot more resilient defensively though.

I bet benteke is feeling rather frustrated.

What Have I Done To Deserve This? by The Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield has been earworm since I heard it on Heart FM in the office yesterday (it was the one ray of light in a beacon of shit...like a Benteke winner this afternoon hopefully).  I spent the first half learning to play it on guitar. It's my new Villa song.

KEA was reasonably good at the start of the season - he looks like a little boy lost today

KEa's had about 2 good games in 16 months, he's absolute gash.

Absolute wank so far, making a Sam Allardyce side look like Barcelona.

I'm struggling to know where to start in summing up what was wrong with that showing.

The scary part is there's little or nothing on the bench to change it. Its down to Lambert to rouse them now and I'm not expecting a lot. A nil-nil would be a moral victory to be honest.

Thank god I didn't go. I nearly always go to West Ham away but I just knew this would be turgid and there is nothing about us currently that wants to make me part with well over £80 and the whole of my Saturday to watch what we are serving up at the moment. Hopefully, that will now lead to us scoring three in the second half...

Missing Delph badly, nothing driving forward from the midfield.  West Ham should be down to 10.  I do worry that there aren't a massive amount of options from the bench.

This is quite incredible. A team that can't defend for shit (us) against a team that can't score for their lives ('ammers). It's like watching a drunk trying to poke someone's eye out with cooked spaghetti.

What worries me is that not long ago, we were saying that we couldn't defend for shit, but we'd always score.

Now we've started defending a bit better - a bit - but stopped scoring.

Frightening isn't it? Ironically, we've brought in strikers, presumably to ensure this didn't happen, when what we actually needed was a midfielder or three.

Quite. I don't really know why he bought Kozak, either. Or Helenius. Or certainly both of them, anyway.

The midfield is awful. KEA is a four decent games a season player, Sylla flatters to deceive, Westwood has regressed, only Delph has improved. Tonev looks like a parks player most of the time.

It's all admirable, the young players thing, but it's really, really difficult to make it work, or else everyone would be doing it.

There's also a line past which it becomes an excuse for not buying in decent, proven players more than an actual plan.

Positives:

We're 45 minutes through the game.

Negatives:

There's still 45 minutes to go.
The referee may play additional time.

It's not so much about Helenius - you're right, he might turn out to be a decent player, but he's come from the Danish league, and is young. It's not so much that we signed any of those strikers, but you've got to wonder whether it was really sensible to buy him AND Kozak. Not to mention Bowery.

Yep, which suggests our team just doesn't have the quality needed to remain solid at the back while posing a consistent goal threat. It seems to be either one or the other at the moment.

I don't have a problem with taking a chance on the likes of helenius and bowery. Even if half of them don't come off but the other do, it's a risk worth taking.

But relying almost entirely on these signings, plus our not-as-good-as-we'd-hoped youth products is a bit of a bind at times.

Having said that, put a fit gabby, Delph, n'zogbia, Okore and an in form Weimann and benteke in that side and it'd be a completely different sight

We're going to find it nigh on impossible to progress if we just keep buying the same level of player.

More of the same wasn't going to help enough this summer, but that's exactly what we did.

this is indeed shit, the sort of game the Scottish manager would be proud of.

Remember QPR away last season? A sterile 0-0 against a team that hadn't won a game yet? That was the day I feared the new dawn wasn't materialising.

1-1 wasn't it? The dearly departed Brett Holman with our goal as I recall.

Sorry 1-1 yes. But the same principle. What happened to our good start?

There was a mildly interesting incident in the first half when Weimann was clean through but lost out in the challenge from Morrison.  A challenge which looked fair at first glance but on the replays looked like a foul, and therefore possibly a sending off.  Seems a fuck of a long time ago now though.

These three points are there for the taking if Lambert is brave enough.

Get KEA off, he adds nothing. Put Tonev on, play him wide and get the ball to him as often as possible with instructions to cross from deep. The two big lads will cause havoc if Sylla and Westwood push on to pick up the scraps.

Times like this it is worth remembering that much more expensively assembled sides under MON and Gregory could be just as hopeless in possession.

The back end of last season was the first time in years is seen a villa side pass the ball like you'd expect an established top flight side to. We were playing in triangles, Lowton and Westwood were crucial to how we were playing the game.

We just look a lot shitter on the ball this season

Just hope we can regain that. Surely we're not deliberately trying to become a more direct and defensive side?

We're not even an upper mid table side on this performance. The squad isn't good enough as today has shown. Missing Delph the mid field was poor and very few chances created. We won't be relegated but we won't be top ten either.
