I think the first time any of us thought differently was the tweet from a few days ago which specifically picked that out. And yes, I did wonder similar on the club as we have actually two down from the squad for CL, albeit one was the 2nd/3rd choice keeper and one was Philogene who couldn't have been replaced if we had only transferred out three. Especially with mentioning Bailey leaving as well.

I still think he's misunderstood it. He says:

The main crux is, clubs are only allowed to register a maximum of three new eligible players after the completion of the league phase and before the start of the knockout phase. There are some exceptions where more new players are allowed to be registered.

The first is for teams whose domestic season start and end in the same calendar year. Dinamo Zagreb, for example, as the Croatian league starts in August and ends in December.

The other is if a club sells a large amount of players before the knockout phase. UEFA only allows four new players to be registered if more than five players in the squad for the group stage have left, and five additions if more than seven have left.

The UEFA website says:

Clubs participating in domestic championships that start and end in the same calendar year are entitled to additional player registrations in the following cases:

If more than five players on the club's List A are no longer registered with their national association as playing for the club concerned after completion of the league phase and before the start of the knockout phase, the club may register one additional player, i.e. a total of four new eligible players, for the remaining matches in the current competition.

If more than seven players on the club's List A are no longer registered with their national association as playing for the club concerned after completion of the league phase and before the start of the knockout phase, the club may register two additional players, i.e. a total of five new eligible players, for the remaining matches in the current competition.

He says it's either summer leagues OR clubs that have sold lots of players. But the rules clearly don't say that.

After the completion of the league phase and before the start of the knockout phase, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registrations must be completed by 6 February 2025 (24:00 CET) at the latest.
