By the end of this window I’m pretty sure we will have spent everything the two sets of rules allow us to. Anyone who wants us to spend more, whether they know it or not, wants a points deduction/fine/transfer ban.

I’m with you 100%

Still not convinced we won’t be active tomorrow but I am also sure we’ll have spent what we were able to

Well Everton fans are over the moon with Tim, so far. They must love our accountancy.

As much as the start of the window seemed encouraging, of this is it, it will feel incredibly deflating by the end of tomorrow. Our squad is better. Our first time needed improvement. Maarten and Onana was a good start. But we needed 1 or 2 proper players to remain a CL side. We will once again be relying on Emery to produce miracles.

Underwhelming window.

I think Unai will use Rogers as the Diaby replacement and SJM as the Bailey cover if needed. JP is nowhere near the required level, which is baffling because he was a shining star during last season's pre-season. Hasn't looked like the same player.
JP has played about 15 mins so far. Give him a blinkin chance

If as was suggested on the WHam podcast that they dicked us over the Duran deal which meant we had to scramble the sale of Luiz before the deadline. Then we would have cashed out Duran and got much better value for Luiz.
The window could have been very different.

The gap left by Diaby and centre-half/right back worry me. It only takes a couple of injuries, we’ve already got one, and we’re pretty exposed. Feels pretty disappointing we haven’t at least closed one of those gaps.

I agree. You would think we would have learnt from last season but we havent and we could be playing even more games than last season

Again, us choosing to hold back from reinforcing our squad in a Champions League season seems ridiculous to me.
Not sure it is our choice. Those pesky PSR rules again

Return from injuries aside, is our squad better?  Basically we have changed:

Tim -> Barkley
Diaby -> JPB
Moreno ->  Maatasen
Luiz -> Onana

I wouldn't say we are far ahead?

Clearly assuming Kamara, Beundia, Mings and Ramsey all come back as the best versions of themselves and no one is seriously injured then we're ahead - but thats a big if.

People have mentioned Chiesa a few times now, obviously I would have wanted Chiesa but there are 2 big problems, he needs to want to come and be affordable under our wage structure to comply with UEFA's bollocks ratio. It's all well and good saying we should get him, maybe we tried? Maybe he thought he could go to a bigger club (and has)?

I can see a Chalobah type loan happening and maybe we'll have to live with the disappointment of not getting another forward in.

Season has started excellently for them. Bet they’re laughing their arses off.

I think the depth is a lot better. One injury to Ollie though and we are fucked because we play a way that utilizes his pressing. Duran ain’t doing that. While I like JP, he’s not better than Diaby. And Onana is excellent but completely different to Luiz. Now Onana and Luiz would have been delightful. So while JJ is back, and Tielemans will step up, and Rogers is great, in my opinion we needed a couple of wow players. Even one would have done. Onana and Maarten are solid additions, and with players coming back overall we are stronger. But just my opinion we are short in the players that make the difference in big games.

We'll know where we are this time tomorrow night. But as it stands the squad is light. Right back is real tricky, nothing there really, and I thought it was our priority position to get someone in for. Anything happens Watkins or Martinez we are in serious bother as well.

Selling Archer is not remotely an issue.
It 100% will be if Watkins or Duran get injured .

Selling Archer looks ridiculous

No matter how many times you say this it doesn't get any more true. Put it another way, if Villa were linked with spending £15 million on a forward who struggled to shine at a woeful Sheffield United team and hadn't scored against a current top flight team this year, and it wasn't a former Villa player, would you have been excited about the deal?
If Watkins or Duran get injured we are down to 1 recognised Nr9 which is madness .

We only play one number nine, so having two around doesn't seem that bad, considering it's exactly what we did last year when we finished fourth.
We got very lucky that Watkins played all season
