I would be amazed if he goes anywhere other than Palace

I don't think he'd be a terrible option to have in the squad at Arsenal.

Fair, but I've thought the same about Tammy Abraham for years.

I mentioned Sterling a week or so ago and it understandably got a mixed rection. His wages puts me off a little but he's a very good player. I think he can play both flanks can't he?

He can play anywhere across the front line
Yes he can, misplace passes, get in the way of others and miss open goals from anywhere across the front line.

Seeing Arteta's press conference comments on the Beeb just now I suspect that is where he's gonna end up!

Agreed. Think Arsenal would be a very good fit for both.

Who's the actual back up for Bailey who will miss games with knocks?

Yes SJM can play out wide but plenty of games we'll need his experience central (Arsenal away last season) when injuries hit or the opposition require it.

It's great to have JPB back but potentially starting away to Real Madrid or Barca in a few months will be a little different to playing for Hull v Rotherham so I'd prefer another experienced player in the squad.

I don't rate him that highly but Bailey with Sterling as back up for a CL night sounds exactly what we should be doing and it then gives flexibility to start Sterling in the league fixture 3-4 days later.

Currently though due to the relationship between the two clubs it just reads as Chelsea have offered us him, we're not that interested and he'll just be loaned out to someone abroad.

Personally, I think it would be a mistake to sign Sterling other than on a loan deal with Chelsea still paying the thick end of his wages.

I just don't see Sawiris and Edens signing off on a player that would cost a fortune to buy. Especially after signing Coutinho on a big salary and still paying for it now.

Philogene & Buendia.

At a push, Rogers or McGinn.

Are we taking the latter two out of other positions? And are these the only potential options?

We wont know until the end of the window...

I want genuine wide options with pace. If we don't sign Sterling we still need another brilliant winger. At least a replacement for Diaby, ideally an upgrade.

A winger that can play 10 would be ideal, much like Diaby but a bit less hot and cold would be good.

I reckon as things stand (and assuming no more loans out and I haven't missed someone really obvious), we have 24 of a 25 man squad.

Quote
Emi
Olsen
Gauci

Cash
Konsa
DC
Mings
Pau
Digne
Maatsen
Kosta

Barkley
Onana
McGinn
Tielemans
Barrenechea
Iling-Junior
Ramsey
Kamara
Buendia

Watkins
Duran
Bailey
Rogers

And looking at how it's balanced, it feels to me that the 25th spot would probably be a defender, and if SIJ goes out on loan then he's replaced by an attacker. And then we'd be done.

Ned is not on that list.

I think watching Rogers play up top in pre season is a good illustration, can play anywhere across the front line doesn’t equate to being very good anywhere across the front line.  Sterling is a good but very frustrating player to watch…can’t help but think there are better strikers players / better financial deals and better fits for our squad in the 500 player list.

But both Iling-Junior and Philogene are genuine wide options with pace that we didn't have last year. I'd agree that neither are upgrades on Diaby, but I think the only reason we bring in another winger is if Iling-Junior is elsewhere.
