Depends how Mings is. Lenglet played a lot last season, so Hermoso might be very useful. If we sign an attacking right back, playing the reverse Konsa formation may still be an option if Hermoso can do that role. We need a big dominant right sided centre back though. The Slovenian or Slovakian from Udinese looked ideal

I agree, we need a dominant centre half and a box to box midfielder, someone with real physical presence in both positions

Gallagher is much better than Cantwell, although that's a very low bar.
Emery will know .

You're right of course, as you were about Ross Barkley..

In both cases they can be work in progress though, due to the squad options we already have. Monchi has a very interesting few weeks ahead.

I must admit i have never heard of Hermoso, so don't know if he is any good - hopefully we are building a squad that is capable of getting us in to the top 4 again.

Pretty sure that around the same time they had Dani West Ham also had the success story of Marco Boogers.

Was he the one who went a bit mental and went off to live in a caravan?

Him and Sasa Curcic having orgies while the windows steamed and the van on wheels wobbled.

I'd be more surprised if we didn't replace Carlos with Hermoso.  A nice 15-20m for Diego goes on a super talented youngster to understudy Watkins.  The 40 for Duran then signs a high class right back allowing us to sell Cash and buy a right central midfielder that has more attacking aspirations than our current batch.
Transfer chess.

What I like about the current Villa set-up, as opposed to the last time we were challenging for European places, is that this time around, it feels like every player we've bought has a future value.  Obviously, there are exceptions, and some will leave at the end of contracts or have them paid up, but for the most part, since we've been promoted, we've mostly bought players who've either appreciated or, at the very least, kept a reasonable amount of their value.

Hopefully the days of spending big money on players getting their last big pay day will become increasingly rare.

Gallagher scored a great goal against us so we have to sign him , it is the law 😃

Ah, the Steve Bruce approach.

There have been quite a few 'exceptions' though. Engels, Nakamba, Samatta, Heaton, Traore, Sanson, Ings, Digne, Coutinho, Dendoncker. All bought for  reasonable amount of money, with little or no increase in value. I'd argue we've had our money's worth out of Digne at least, and allowing for amortisation we didn't lose on Ings, but the rest we all took a hit on, or will do.

Yeah, hopefully it's from here onwards where we'll finally get a premium on selling our players because we're perceived as a CL/big club at last.

It's probably less perception and hopefully how good the players we no longer need are. If we're 14th and selling players that aren't good enough to play for us, it's unlikely clubs will want to spend much money on them.

If we're fourth and selling the players who helped us get to fourth, then they're probably going to bring more in.

RB - i would imagine we will take our new Serbian kid on USA tour to see what he is made of before we sell Cash and look for a replacement.

Not fussed either way if Duran stays or goes - i will be ok in equal measures on either outcome.

Really need a big, good in the air right footed CB.

I genuinely see Barkley as the Doug replacement - certainly short term sharing the role with Tielemans.

New #10? - Surely we have to see if Buendia hits previous form.

I do not think we need that much more additions and certainly do not know enough about Felix to assess wjhether he would be worth the preumably huge fee and wages he would command.

I put this in here instead of the Philogene thread because it potentially affects our finances.

Apparently Everton have agreed a £16M fee for Philogene. Ipswich have agreed a £35M fee along with another player whose name escapes me.

Palace are also interested, as are Barcelona. But those skint jokers want him on loan with the option to buy next year.

Our interest is only due to a 15% sell in clause we have apparently.

At £16M, I would bite the bullet, accept that selling him was a mistake & bring him back.

Most reports reckon we aren't doing that though, so hopefully, the interest will drive up the price so our fee is larger.

You're right of course, as you were about Ross Barkley..

Especially about his time at Marseille...

Potentially still a lot of business to be done. With perhaps up to 10 players looking to leave permanently or on loan with, Coutinho, Dendonker, Hause, Chambers, Archer, Olsen, Duran, Cash, Carlos, Moreno all potentially leaving. Very exciting to see some of their replacements.

Aston Villa have contacted Federico Chiesa's representatives with a huge financial package and the lure of playing Champions League football. The relationship between the two clubs are outstanding after the recent Douglas Luiz swap deal.

Let's just buy Juventus
