Yes I know there are reasons why the deal is shit. But it's still shit.

So, if all goes to plan.. its essentially three players in today, all under the age of 23 (LM, LB and CDM).

4

Maatsen
Iling-Junior
Barrenechea
Dobbin

With Barkley to add to that.

If we could add Onana, a new RB, a new CB and a new Striker to that list, whilst shipping out sone of our dross it will have been a good window - and we won’t miss Luiz or Dhuran

We wont miss Luiz? A questionable position to take.

Not missing Douglas is a huge stretch

in fairness to the lad he had a very large wide  face to give he impression he was portly 👀

Fat blokes tend to have large, wide faces.

The trouble with McKennie is that he wants to have his cake and eat it.

Yeh all fat jokes are fair game now he’s not coming. The tub of lard.

Sexual is going to miss him the most.

I'd have to work hard to miss that fat cnut.

And those big fat cheeks are used to store food (mostly cakes) in for later, so he doesn’t risk getting hungry. Like a hamster does.

He’s fat and shit. No thanks.

Without wanting to be a party-pooper, and I enjoy a shiny new toy as much as the next person, that:

(a) seems like far more of an overhaul than I think this squad really needs. The finely-tuned-machine that we seem to be at our best, feels like it doesn't really need nearly half the parts replacing.

(b) leaves us very packed in midfield. I get that we will have more games, and there will be plenty of match-time for everyone, and we got tired, and we'll probably have three more ACLs before the season starts - but even so, we'd then have Kamara, McGinn, Tielemans, Barkley, Onana and Barrenechea competing for two or three places in the team.

To fill those same spots Arsenal have Odegaard, Partey, Rice and Jorginho (and they seem to be talking about replacing Partey, not adding to them).

Man City have Rodri, Kovacic, De Bruyne and Nunes.

You could argue that Tielemans and McGinn would be more "push forward and be more attackers than midfielders", but then the same would apply to de Bruyne and Odegaard.

Just feels a bit over-stuffed to me.

Chris Heck said we would have to be creative this transfer window, which made me wonder.

Are our transfer data boffins  looking not only at players that Unai wants in terms of position, skill, age, price etc., but also factoring in the club they're at- what type of player they're looking for and do we have someone we can offer in a swap deal?

Both clubs get what they want, it cuts down on cash going in/out and you can "price" the deal at whatever level you need for PSR - within reason.

Genius if that's the case?

Agreed, Dave. I'd rather forego Barkley for Onana if he is realistic.

Barrenechea doesn't seem to have played a lot of football for a 23 year old, maybe we'll loan him out and look to sell him permanently to Ipswich or Luton etc. next summer and make a few bob on him. I can't see imagine him starting CL games.

There's no way Luton or Ipswich could afford the Argentine Rodri™, not that we'll want to sell him anyway.

I do wonder if our complete lack of midfield options when we got to the crunch last season has spooked Unai a bit. Having a good back up for Kamara is vital, this Barronechea seems to replace Tim and Dendonker. If we take it Barkley is replacing Luiz, we are net at the same position, Youri, McGinn, the Barron, Barkley, Kamara. I think we're still one short in there with the way we play. I think it's unlikely to be Onana though. More likely a player that can play a number of more advanced midfield roles.

A month ago if asked I woud have thought Luiz was worth at least £80m, even in the current slightly soft market.  As promising as these lads may be I just don't see how this deal stacks for us.  It feels like Juve have absolutely had our pants down.

We have a minimum of 48 games next season, probably about 30 before we see Kamara again,  we need three options for every position, particularly in midfield.

We are def on the risky side of the deal.

I'm certainly not against the Barkley idea in principle, but imagine that statement six months ago - it would have seemed absurd. It still feels pretty nuts even with Barkley's decent end to the season.
