Barnes won’t improve Newcastle much anyway. They already have saint maximin and Gordon in that position so minimal net gain.

That’s how good clubs improve though, strength in depth and no noticeable drop off in quality if they have an injury.
out of those three I'd rather have  Barnes

When was the last time we had a squad with this much quality in every position?
I would say that it is the first time we have ever had it. Football as a squad game has emerged gradually, and you wouldn’t say we had such strength in depth even in 1981. MON’s teams didn’t have it either.

Or bench was often filled with the likes of Salifou, Routledge, Harewood, Shorey etc in the MON era

So De Gea has announced he’s leaving, how frenzied will the Emi links get now?

He’s been out of contract for a few weeks, reports said Man U had asked him not to sign for anyone until they were sorted the cheeky scamps.

If you believe the stories they offered him a new contract a while ago and when he signed it they changed their minds and tried to renegotiate it. It obviously didn't work out and he ended up out of contract, and then they asked him not to sign for anyone else in case they couldn't get a new keeper in. I understand their reasoning behind it all but seems a very shoddy way to treat such a long serving player.

They also wouldn't let Henderson go to Forrest permanently, but that one might also be allowed go through now too.

This.

Two or three players for a position means "next man up"...

And we need to stop thinking purely about the players interest & their game time.

Yes we want to keep players happy, but we need to keep the club happy first & foremost, so we need to be a little selfish in the clubs favour...

Brentford going back in for Johnson with a £35m plus add on deal. They believe a deal is there to be done. So be interesting to see if we firm anything up as he is 100% on our list (not sure on priority order)
£40m plus add-ons would be a good deal for us. I'm sure we can give the player what would be required. He offers flexibility up front and is still learning; what better place to do this than at the Emery Academy of football.

I don’t think Emi is going anywhere. At least not this season. He wanted to play in Europe with us and he helped us achieve that. He’s loyal and he knows how much the club means to him. That’s not to say he won’t consider his options if we don’t continue to progress. I think he’d be happy to stay if become regulars in Europe.

I just find it a bit odd that after we did virtually nothing in January and were told that we were "keeping our powder dry" for the summer, that we're not a bit further forward, especially up front where we're at our weakest. Players will need time to adjust to Emery's methods and standards, and so leaving it until the end of the transfer window isn't a great idea.

I don’t think that’s what we are doing. And he showed that in a few weeks he completely transformed us from strong relegation candidates to CL form. He will bring in players that immediately fit his style of play rather than need full pre seasons to acclimatize.

My guess is Emery wants to have a deep squad. He’s suggested that and he wants to compete on all fronts next season. We’ve got two very good players in but with players returning next week, including some talented younger players he wants to look at everything before deciding who stays and who we need to bring in. By the end of the window I’ll be stunned if we don’t have a much stronger squad than the one that ended the season.

And the only "links" there's been about him have been people assuming he's too good for us and that Utd or Chelsea would be in for him because they needed a new keeper. I haven't seen anything that's come from him or us about it.

I'd be amazed if he needed to look at them back in training before he decides who stays and who goes - that would be crazy, and I'm not sure how we'd expect to manage a transfer window like that.

My comment was in reference to players returning to the fold. Youngsters mainly and how they fit in with the rest. I’m sure the likes of Sanson or Wesley aren’t required and are just waiting on moves. And he’s just put together what he wants his recruitment staff to be along with Monchi.

There was a list in the Birmingham Mail q&a of players that are being allowed to leave, younger ones on loan, senior ones sold. Sanson and Wesley were both on it. Interestingly Dendonker wasn't on it, but maybe he's the kind of player that we'd want a replacement for before we sell him.
