Anyway, I always thought Johnson was a ****** after that.

I can’t remember exactly, but were the Gerrard signings Coutinho, Carlos and Digne? If so - Jesus. Aside from his ego, lack of man management and lack of tactics, he’s left us with 3 expensive, relatively old, not fit for purpose players.

High wages little sell on value too.

Carlos was fit for purpose, he just got a really bad injury, which nobody could have foreseen. Digne very much is fit for purpose. He's on high wages, but he's easily good enough for where we are now, and proved his value when Moreno was injured. Coutinho hasn't really lived up to the hype due to a succession of injuries but if he can get fit and stay fit, he could still be an important player.

TBF Coutinho was relatively shite before his injuries. Although from memory didn’t he have a good game prior to breaking down? What a frustrating player he is. He could easily be the best player in our squad one game and then our worst for several matches.

Relatively shite? He had one decent game for us pre injury last season, Arsenal at home. He was rubbish in nearly every other one, including Stevenage. His career has been on the slide for years pre Villa, unfortunately his loan form was only a temporary improvement, he regressed as soon as he had the permanent deal in the bag.

Digne, for the contract we gave him, is really average too in every facet on his play. Moreno adds so much more and proved that within a few weeks. They were just two lazy signings when we already had Targett and Buendia. We tore up whatever strategy we were meant to be following when we got these two and Ings in. I'd be stunned if both didn't follow Ings out the door this summer.

From memory SHA won it on the night we were playing Barcelona in the Super Cup, then the year after (or after that) both Villa and SHA played in it, with predictable results, a copper or security guard was CS gassed and it was never played again.

just thought the way he received and moved the ball around was classy

Not suggesting he has been a success, far from it
But I still wouldn’t write him off just yet
