I have said it before & I will day it again, if you take away the set pieces, Ward-Prowse is decidedly average.

He is small, weak & slow.

Yes he is a neat passer & has good technique, but we already have Dendoncker who is a slow, neat passer with good technique.

But Dendoncker is 6'2".

I think we have passed the point where we want to purchase the quality of the likes of Ward-Prowse.

100%….if they weren’t skint he’d be a nailed on Everton signing

I could definitely see that happening if they still had cash, you’re right.

JWP does not excite me.

I think he’s a good, and underrated player. We forget many people, me included, thought McGinn had reached his ceiling and was on the way down. But we have an exceptional manager who knows how to coach and now he looks excellent. I could easily imagine that with Ward-Prowse.

For me he was ok when Romeo was doing the donkey work in midfield for him but he doesn’t impose himself on games-no doubt he is wonderful at set pieces but he goes missing too easily and too often.

JWP another no from me. Surely he is similar but nowhere near as good as Dougie.

I can see him at Palace or West Ham. He's no good for where we think we're going.

Slightly concerned by Fabrizio’s comments on Emi today and the possibility that he will move.

Oh well. Time will tell… hopefully he’ll get a massive new contract here.

According to PaddyPower we favs for Tielemans and Barnes. 2nd favourite for Tierney
Oddly JWP is favoured to sign for Newcastle

Just looking at JWPs stats on Whoscored, and they are quite similar to Doug’s. Obviously, those don’t take into account how the team is set up and who is around them.

The question is, who in our midfield would he be an upgrade on? His stats are better than McGinn in attack and similar defensively, but as others have mentioned, he doesn’t have the physicality we’d miss if he replaced him.

We’re not going to pay to replace Doug with an older player. Same with Ramsey, who has better goal contributions per minute, more tackles per game, similar passing accuracy, just less key passes at this stage in his development.

Buendia’s stats don’t match up to JWP or the others, so he could be an improvement there. But what’s the price tag? And are there really no better players to fulfil that role?

I wouldn't see him.playing in the Luiz / Kamara role if he came.  We have no cover in the positions McGinn and Ramsey play (think.they would suit Sanson but not sure we will see him.again), so could see JWP as an option for those roles really.

I suppose there is some merit in signing English based players in that they don't have to adapt and bed in.  Barnes, Tielemans and JWP all decent players, although aren't the sexy type of signings that we are probably expecting.  I'm sure that Unai will make them better players though.

I know in an ideal world you directly upgrade the first XI but in the Kamara and Luiz position, who realistically could that be who would come? I can't think of many. So the likes of Tielemens or JWP would be strength in depth in that area to attack on all fronts. I'm not saying that's where I'd want a quarter of our transfer 'war chest' going, mind but an improvement on Donk? I'd say it is. I agree though that JWP has West Ham written all over it with Rice going.

I suppose Guendouzi would be the preferred optionm for me, but we know that JWP and the others mentioned are already in the Premier Division and apart from last season were doing well.   As for the Donk, for some reason, there is a feeling that he just doesn't do enough to get in every week, although is a very steady player.
