Perhaps we should look beyond players who've just got relegated and did well against us.
Indeed. My motto is never sign players from teams involved in relegation unless they are absolute gems like Grealish was with us.

Absolutely. Our new fullback Moreno is highlighting this. He’s been superb the last five games and now looks like a very shrewd signing and cost very little.

Barnes and Bowen would be good.
I think both will be priced out of the market. When you consider that we were reportedly looking at Neco Williams for €40-50m in January, I'd say that is rather better value than Lesta and Spam would be looking for.

Based on what? He could be amazing, but half a dozen goals for a 20 year old in two seasons feels a bit Dwight McNeil to me.

Given Leeds paid £5m for Gnonto who was younger  and was performing pretty much the same, what is "value" about £42m (his release clause) for Williams?

well, I wasn't commenting particularly about Williams; more about the inflated prices likely for Bowen and Barnes. Williams is a full Spanish international, though.
I'd far prefer finding a £5m diamond in the rough or promote one of our youngsters.

Buyout clauses for players from Basque clubs are pretty high actually, I don't think we'll be signing Nico Williams for anything south of 30m.

Bowen would be top of my list, works hard, can beat his marker and has a decent shot on him, yes he will cost a lot but that's what top teams are doing. Big no to Abraham, we already have a decent finisher who works twice as hard.

Absolutely. The way things are changing with us, we can attract players clubs don't want to lose, rather than ones clubs have to sell.

There is going to be a lot of transfers this summer I think, across the board.  Newcastle will spend big, Man City will too.  Liverpool and Spurs need to refresh, Chelsea have a million players they will offload, Arsenal will want to build on what they have.  Then you have the relegated clubs who need to downsize.  Like others, I can see us going for a few players Emery knows well from Europe and maybe a one or two from domestic clubs.  We are demonstrably top 6 with this squad and this manager, so it's properly exciting to see where we can go next, with (you'd think/expect) a load of money to spend in the summer.

Bowen and Barnes are playing for sides that might get relegated - admittedly the crisp munchers are more likely than the kit stealers but either or both are still in relegation trouble - and I think both have the quality and character to improve us and would be relatively low risk.

Though I imagine we are probably looking for one wide/attacking player rather than two.

I wouldn't base a transfer strategy on trying to buy quality from relegated teams, though neither would I discount a player just because they play for a team that goes down. Ward-Prowse at Saints is another good player that will have plenty of suitors. UTV

On the subject of buying players from relegated clubs - and Leicester obviously aren't down yet - but we are all raving about Ollie's improvement since Emery came in, and he's still only got twelve league goals playing centre forward in a team in good form.

Harvey Barnes has ten goals this season, and Maddison has nine (plus six assists). And neither of them plays up front. Plus that's in the team that's currently second bottom.  Both of those players would improve our squad, and would go ahead of Bailey and Buendia in the pecking order my mind.

Expensive, yes. And there'd be competition, definitely, but they have proven Premier League quality and would make us better overnight.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them end up teams that qualify for the Champions League.

Ward-Prowse would be a good rotation option for Luiz if we're playing 3 games a week. But we'll also be looking at people like Guendozi and others like him. Guerte at Sporting Lisbon's been mentioned in transfer speculation.

I’m not sure he adds enough other than his free kicks to justify the likely costs especially considering any potential sell on value.  I’d be happy to see Everton or West Ham over spend on him.

Ward-prowse is a MOTD player for me. When we linked with him I made an effort to focus on his game when Southampton were on the TV and I didn't actually rate him.
He goes missing for pretty much most of the game and only comes alive when a dead ball situation arises and the odd goal opportunity.

Does Ward-Prowse enhance the current squad? Not for me he doesn’t.
