That pissing around at the back will honestly be the death of me.
It was excruciating, so often needlessly going backwards when there were forward options available.
I hated it.

It's the Emery way.

Moreno, I think he's the latest in a line of left backs who are alright, without looking miles better than the one before.

Yes I said the same.

Overall though I thought it was a good performance today, no one playing badly, we seemed to be putting Emery’s plan into action with good possession football and some tidy passing and link up play. We just seemed to lack a bit of pace if anything, with that we’d have been miles better than them. The possession football and tidy passing in and around our own penalty area does concern me at times though.

Two mid-table sides who largely cancelled each other out. I thought Palace tried to bully us but we didn’t let them and the few pieces of genuinely good football came from us. McGinn probably our best player.

Agreed. I tried to stay awake, but just couldn't. I think after 20 minutes, the passing around at the back was the best sleeping pill I've ever experienced.

Thought the set up of the team looked better today.  Think McGinn is suited to that outside midfielder role and although Ramsey gave it away too often, he had some good moments in that position on the other side.  That four across the middle allowed Buendia to play more central (just a shame Coutinho is not fit as I think that role would really suit him).

The only issue with it is that we lack width at times.  Moreno and Cash got in some decent advanced positions, but go backwards more often than not.

Good teams play badly and still win.

Every three points we take pushes us that little bit further up the table and increases the likelihood of the manager being able to attract the players he really wants playing for him in the summer, rather than having to put something together from (almost entirely) Gerrard's squad.

It's about points and points only for the rest of the season as far as I am concerned.
Twas ever thus.

A good, solid win against the team immediately behind us in the table. We're now 7 points clear of them, and the same behind 5th.

We weren't ever in any difficulty; they didn't have a shot on target in the whole game.

We frustrated them and they just fouled and moaned repeatedly. It wasn't a free-flowing game but it was a game we controlled and did what we needed to do. Brilliant stuff that the manager is renowned for and the reason he wins matches and competitions.

There were a lot of frustrated Villa fans, as you can tell by reading here, but if you think about it for just a moment, would you rather we'd gone for it and lost 4-2 or do what we did and win 1-0?

I think that you can see we were far more disciplined, shackles were on and that the manager had decided, as the proud manager he is, there was no way we were losing another game at home.

We were clearly the better side, and played pragmatically in order to win. Sometimes you just have to grind it out.

Their 'goal' was offside but also had a foul on Buendia in the first place to get the ball. Watkins missed a great opportunity to make it more comfortable but I'm just really pleased with a win.

Youre just going to have to live with it. It worked for us, it works for a lot of successful teams.

I see it a bit like Test Cricket when teams are winning by staying in and scoring singles rather than playing swashbuckling attacking shots and going for boundaries all the time.

Right now, it's what we need to do. When we buy some better players to strengthen our forward and wide options we can, and should, expect more.

We will beat teams such as Southampton/Palace/Everton playing this way, its the games against the likes of Liverpool / City that we will really struggle who high press.

Results wise will get us mid table but at the moment that will be that.

Yes, I think you're right, Drummond.

Emery has his way, and like you said, we'll buy better players, and the style will improve.

Exactly 22 points from 22 games since Emery took over by my reckoning.  We haven't played well all the time but have either won playing ordinary or created enough chances to get something from every game - Cit-eh aside

It's great to be looking up instead of down. Still a long way to go but I think with Unai at the helm we can now look longer term to progression. For too long it's been one step forward one step back. What seems to be so different is that he knows exactly what he wants. No panicking if things start  to go wrong. A clear methodical approach. Yesterday was hardly a thriller but walking out the ground discussing dreams of Europe was far far better than coming out and worrying about how the teams below us had got on.

Anyone got a video of Ashley Young throwing the ball over Sahas head down by the corner flag when it went out of play? I burst out laughing when it happened but my Wife missed it and wants to see it.
