I really hope the one that was on a flag recently is captured by the fans and belted out to the tune of Let it Be

"Speaking words of wisdom, Emery - Emery,Emery, Emery, Emery..speaking words of wisdom Emery"

Agreed, first new chant I've heard that I'd genuinely like to see taken up.

Bells is a proper old school Villa song and most of us of a certain age have fond memories of it. Not sure how well it works in 2023 though.

Spot on.

It's not that old school though is it, early 90s saw it's inception I think? maybe it was late 80's.

Much earlier, Bren. I've mentioned it before but we sang TBAR non-stop on the Sutton Lions coach all the way back from Norwich in 84.

Oh and we won..

Sang it for ages in the second half too. Villa everywhere that night. A bit different from the FA Cup replay just before. About 250 of us that night.

Another one of the Sutton/Falcon Lodge /Alum Rock crew some happy times on that coach and good people

The Villa Slasher struck that night if I remember correctly. We got there early and found a snooker hall with bar open and completely unmanned like the Mary Celeste. We helped ourselves to free beer until about 5 o’clock when we all settled down to watch Grange Hill on the telly, for which we needed 50p pieces to watch. That tells you about our ages, apart from having Groombridge with us. We were in awe of him.
Johnny didn't you love him , nutter that he was.
Just back from a visit that took in 4 games, lots of story swapping and tales that some had forgot
Groombridge featured in a few of the tales

One of the great certainties of life is that whenever TBAR is mentioned, Norwich 1984 gets brought up. Three times in three weeks we went there, 300 in the FA Cup replay, we had less on the train back to town in the league than Chelsea who'd been to Cambridge. In the middle we had 3,000 there for the League Cup. And I still say that the team we had then was one of the great Villa if onlys... We needed perhaps two more signings; Ellis thought we needed Graham Turner.

Three times in a week we played them. Away, home and away. I was there for all. You can't imagine how much difficulty I had accepting Kevin Richardson joining us. Everton away was as ugly as I'd seen it from Villa fans. The upper tier seats were ripped out  and flung into the Everton support to our left.

Yes, it was erm… lively. And the home leg.

Thinking about it, I really think we need to update one of our classics considering we look so small time taking the piss out of a club no longer on our radar. We may as well be taking the piss out of Walsall. All things considered I'd like to hear the following:

Coventry are listening
To the song we are singing..

Let's face it, we're more likely to be playing them sometime this century than the Rags. And besides, I really think we give those hamlets in south east Birmingham far too much attention. Plus, it's only a matter of time before the two teams merge - one name from each club: 'Coventry' and 'City'.

Thoughts?

I'd not been a huge fan of Hi Ho, but it sounded bloody awesome after the City and Arsenal games. Whole ground as one, felt bloody brilliant.

The trouble with Hi Ho Silver Lining is that there's too much song and only one brief line in the chorus when Aston Villa gets sung. Most people don't know the words to the rest of it, so it just sort of gets mumbled before the next "and it's Hi Ho Aston Villa" followed by and it's something something, mmmnnnthhh, brgghuujjk....

I heard it quite frequently in Mostar too. Sarajevo maybe as well, but I may just thave been singing alone

I always sing the rest from back in the day…

And it’s hi ho Aston Villa
Everywhere we go there’s agro
You’ll see our toe-caps shining
Razor blades and Crombie lining…

Thanks Percy. I have been trying to remember the last two lines all season.
