Villa songs
« on: January 11, 2023, 11:04:45 PM »
A lot of fans would relate to full time songs of Don’t look back in anger or Hi Ho Silver Lining by Jeff Beck. News of his untimely death has been released, we need a win Friday night, and hope the club and fans give a great rendition of his famous old song …..

I'm not a fan of us using Hi Ho Silver lining. it's always felt like it was a decision in the marketing department to play it... It has no connection with us and Wolves used it well before we did.

Be nice to sing it on Friday in honour of Jeff Beck, but after than can we bin it?

As far back as I can recall the song was played by mobile DJ's (such as the now legendary Aquarius and The Mighty Quinn) at Birthdays, weddings and the like and those full of Double Diamond, Skol White Stripe and Babycham would bellow the name of their team at the appropriate moment. I always felt it was a Midlands thing but more popular with us and the 8 Track Tramps because it scanned better. And it was very hard to fit "shit on the Villa" or "we know what we am" in that gap.

I watched the Sheff Wed v Newcastle FA cup game last week at Hillsborough, and SW use it too.

I'm not a fan either and was surprised they brought it back. Not my thing at all.

The words I sang were:

And it’s Hi Ho Aston Villa
Everywhere we go there’s agro
Lets see those toe caps shining
And the razor blades
In your Combie lining.

But might just have been the folks I was with... none of us were skinheads or carried razorblades or were anywhere near as hard as we felt we were standing at the back of the Holte in the 70's

It was sung at Villa back in the skinhead days in the 70s as Rioch says it’s just that Wolves haven’t thought up any new ones since then.

We've used it to some degree for over 30 years.

It’s the first Villa song my nephew has managed to learn! Except he thinks it’s ‘GO GO Aston Villa!’
He’s 9 FFS - he epitomises our songbook issues as a fan base!

Another non-fan here.  The first time I heard it at a ground was Molyneux so it's a no from me.

Us, Wolves and Sheff Weds have used it for donkey's years. Most clubs that could fit their name in used it back in the day but we are the 3 main clubs that carried on with it. No club can claim as 'theirs'.

Longer I reckon...we used to sing a version of it at college after games/beer and a different version at Villa Park during games...I left college in 1975!

It was played at our wedding reception, not sure why the DJ played it but what was hilarious was seeing the dance floor completely empty when it came on. Blades fans hate it. My lad (8) likes it.
