Aston Villa can confirm that Alex Moreno has joined Nottingham Forest on loan.

The full-back joined Villa in January 2023 and helped the club qualify for European football at the end of that season.

Moreno signed from Real Betis in his native Spain where he had made 122 appearances in three years.

Last term he made 29 appearances in all competitions, scoring three times as Villa reached the semi-final of the UEFA Europa Conference League and finished fourth in the Premier League.

Bit more info from Forest

Nottingham Forest is delighted to announce the signing of Álex Moreno from Aston Villa.

The 31-year-old has joined on loan until the end of the season with the Club holding an option to make the move permanent.

Moreno arrives having played 29 times across all competitions for Villa last season, in a campaign which saw them qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

The full-back previously plied his trade in Spain, playing 127 times for Rayo Vallecano and 122 times for Real Betis, before a move to Villa materialised in January 2023.

That move came on the back of establishing himself as a key player for Betis, helping the club win the Copa del Rey in 2022.

The Spaniard made an immediate impact upon his arrival in the West Midlands, registering three assists in 19 Premier League appearances as Villa qualified for the UEFA Europa Conference League, and joins Forest having featured just shy of 50 times for the Villans.

Chief Football Officer Ross Wilson said: “Álex is a player we have had a long-standing interest in so we are naturally all very happy to see him arrive at Nottingham Forest today.

“He has amassed significant experience in La Liga and the Premier League, and he brings all of that quality and experience to our group now.”

A good "interim" option who played his part in our success. I wish him well but don't think we'll miss him terribly.

Interesting that they were apparently interested in him before he signed for us. Perhaps that's got something to do with why he ended up there rather than back in Spain.

I loved Alex when he first arrived but the injury and intensity of the league clearly done for him.  And it shows how quickly we are moving on from this standard as arrogant as that is not meant to sound.

Disappointed, consensus seems that his injury has done for him and I'm not convinced by that. I think he could still offer a real attacking threat Hopefully Maatsen can do similar.

Sensible move that suits all parties - he was going to be 3rd choice behind Maatsen and Digne and a loan gives us flexibility. More smart business

We had to do it obviously but what a player Forest have got themselves for a season. I really don't see much difference between the 3 players, other than Digne settled into the position last season so would be harsh to drop and Mattsen is a youngster so future proof. We've never looked better for left back options that's for sure.
