The PL rules are the same (or just about to be). The only difference is we’ll be able to spend 85% of our revenue on wages if we’re not in Europe, against 70% if we are.

There may be different rules on what counts as allowable revenue however. If so, I think that needs to change. One set of rules please.

Brilliant isn’t it, you can spend more in wages to try and qualify for European football. Then when you do, you have to sell a player or two and bring the squad cost down, becoming less competitive in the process… “Stay in your lane!”

Definitely with Champions league football, probably not so for the lesser contests. All this, whilst balancing improving player contracts, paying bonuses and trying to improve squad depth. Ensuring you have an appropriate off ramp to the likelihood of only spending one season in Europe.

The trouble as I see it is we’ve obviously been hit with the sudden transition from PSR to SCR. In many ways it’s our own fault for misjudging it but just as we’d pretty much sorted our domestic PL PSR position, SCR comes at us and means the increased spending in Wages we’d done to compete domestically and qualify for the CL meant we were then non compliant with UEFA SCR. It seems slightly unfair to me that clubs who do transition quickly to the CL like ourselves aren’t at least given some transition allowance to get your house in order? Anyway as long as we keep up the commercial grind, we’ll get there. If we qualify for the CL then hopefully we can find a front of shirt sponsor to give us at least £35-£40m per season to get us into that sort of keeping up with the Joneses territory.

What's galling is were not even being allowed to keep up with the Joneses, on transfer fees and agents we've been outspent by the vast majority of the division. It's only on wages where we are near competitive and even then we're miles behind the SKY 6. Emery has just done a fantastic job and in a way the continuity has benefited us to a degree to a point but we are getting to the phase now where we need fresh blood and to replace players getting past their peaks.

Agree, but being so heavily reliant on being in the Champions League isn't sustainable.  I suppose when you look at the teams in other countries currently above us in the money league, then they are in it pretty much every year due to the strength of their leagues.  What I find telling is that some of the English clubs are in there without being in it.
