Putting this here because Buendia has made Garth's team of the week (as has Martinez).
But FFS:

Emiliano Buendia (Aston Villa)
Awarding penalties are within the gift of the referee and nobody else - even if we disagree with him it his ultimately his opinion.

Anthony Taylor's decision to award Aston Villa a penalty for the tackle by Everton's Idrissa Gueye on Buendia, were he to look at it again, video evidence would show Gueye made contact with the ball first and minimal contact with the player.

But the Argentina international made all the difference when he came on the pitch just after the hour mark and took Villa's performance into overdrive. Having won the penalty he sealed the match with a excellent finish.

The implication being that penalties shall only be awarded if all the opponents in the box are fouled. Garth thinking outside the box again.
but failing to notice it was Mcginn who won the penalty.

You'd think that someone at the BBC would have at least watched the highlights and suggested an edit.

Just taken another look tonight and amendments have been made to name McGinn as the player involved in the penalty incident.

Garth Crooks also makes the mistake of claiming that Gana got the ball. It has been pointed out a number of times that it was knee to knee before he touched the ball and that was the foul that led to the penalty. (Sorry for the lateness of the response - just come back from a few days away.)

He really does score a lot more headers than you'd expect someone who is 5ft 8 and about nine stone to score.

Why does he keep getting picked by Argentina and then not being put in the squad?

Cos he's not especially good?

He’s like our second keeper on the bench. Goes along for the jolly and “experience”. It’s a bit shit though to fly all that way and not even make the bench for a game vs Curaçao. A nation with the population of Telford.

Why even arrange a friendly against such a small nation? It would be like England arranging a friendly against San Marino.

So why do they select him for a call-up at all ?!

Because he is quite good, they want him to be part of training squads and when Messi finally hangs up his boots they'll need him.

To not have him on the bench with all the other subs just seems ridiculous. Even the Villa wouldn't pick a third goalkeeper ahead of him...

Ongoing post World Cup celebrations, without the risk of a defeat dampening things.

It's part of football, encouraging and helping the less developed footballing nations to spread the love of the game. How else would they get the opportunity to grow?

You could argue the same about pre-season games for the Villa too.

Yeah but this is half the world away, not a few postcodes down the road to keep Walsall wassailing another year.

I also think they’re taking the opportunity to bump up Messi’s goals and stats to help with the GOAT title.

Don’t blame them, Argentina will be making money from messi long after he’s worm food.
