I went past Parkhead recently and noticed there was very little around it, has it always been that way or did Celtic buy up houses and land around it to demolish and expand?

I recall from Simon Inglis' 'The Football Grounds of Great Britain' that Celtic had to do some sort of deal with the authorities because one of the stands overhung a cemetery, and the deceased had been promised an uninterrupted view of the sky.

I reckon 6ft of dirt would be a bigger problem than a bit of a shadow from a football stand.

As long as it's not protestant dirt.

I thought 2034 was already going to be in Saudi Arabia. That would leave England hosting no earlier than 2038.

World Cup 2034 is in Saudi Arabia, under current hosting rules, England would be ineligible to host/co-host until 2042. England, Scotland, Wales and Republic of Ireland are hosting the Euros in 2028, and Villa Park has already been selected as one of the venues.

If England host the World Cup in 2042, Villa Park might well be the only club ground that was also a host venue in 1966.

*Old Trafford will either be 'New Trafford' or have fallen down by then.

Hillsborough will still be there.

Also, they could have got around that with clever use of mirrors. Or these days, cameras projecting images of the sky. Like that Polestar that doesn't have a back window. Just like that.

I know it will, but I very much doubt it would selected as a World Cup venue.

Yep, but also it'll be the only other ground still in existence...

"doubt" is very polite BV.

Villa Park has been consistently "upgraded" over the years.
Hillsborough seems to have gone the other way.
Absolute shithole.

Still amazes me that the venue that held the disaster that sparked so much change in football stadia remains largely the same.

I agree, always found it incredible the Leppings Lane stand wasn't demolished after what happened in it.

Yep, it's still a horrible, unsafe-feeling stand now.

Wasn't there reported issues of about fan safety only last season?

Capacity was reduced after overcrowding against Newcastle in the FA Cup.

It is eerie they still use the at tunnel for fans to enter. I remember going with Villa not long after the disaster and feeling pretty sickened looking down and I was in the upper tier.

They rebuilt their main South Stand for Euro 96.

It’s amazing in hindsight they hosted Euro 96, a League Cup Final replay, and semi final replay in the 90s.
