The best thing I can say about Emi Martinez is that he is one of the few - possibly only two - players I have seen for Villa who is the best in the world in their position at the time they played. The only other I can think of is Paul Mcgrath.
That's a very good way of putting it.
Both were/are flawed geniuses and as such prone to mistakes and poor games.  Yet, both were/are the best at that moment in time.

You could say he was responsible for the Everton loss as much as he was responsible for the Newcastle win on Sunday.

One of our best ever players and certainly our best ever keeper. As he’s contracted till 2029 he ain’t going anywhere cheaply.

I would say partly responsible for the Everton. It wasn't entirely his fault and we really should be scoring against that lot. We didn't play well as a team. His save in the first few seconds against Newcastle completely changes what that game could have been. 1-0 down inside a minute to a team we almost always lose to would be have been crushing.

Yep. I think we're headed into "will they pay what we want?" territory here. Could still be at Villa for a long time. Have to see.

Following last night's clean sheet against Brighton, Emi Martinez now has the highest save percentage (77.4%), and prevented the most goals (4.9) of any goalkeeper in the Premier League this season. https://x.com/AVFCStatto/status/2021877663418196267

This is great for Emi but doesn't stand the team in good light. Often the highest save stats involve goalkeepers of teams in the bottom 4/5 positions. Poor teams.

He’s played a huge part in the 4 points we’ve gained the past week.

He’s such a brilliant keeper, that save last night where he tipped it onto the crossbar was another incredible save.

He’s performed really well recently. Maybe he's got a point to prove after receiving some very justified criticism. You don’t hear the “world’s No.1” so often these days, but rather “one of the premiership best keepers”.

It’s been good for him.

Recently? I’d say all season he’s been pretty much spectacular. He’s and a clanger a couple of times, but in this day and age with the way we play out from the back and the corner situations it’s not surprising.

I think today was the perfect example of why people say the current version of Emi wins/saves as many points as he loses. Some fantastic saves but was terribly positioned for the first goal.

He was a bit out of position but it’s a wonder strike and he compensated with the other saves. More worrying is we appeared to be prioritising defensive solidity at the back over our ability to play out of the back by selecting Mings over Torres, and it didn’t really do what we appeared to be looking for.
