Keeping him to make room for Rashford would be shit tbh.

I reckon that's what might happen.

I wouldn't have a massive problem with that were it not for the fact that Emi would be turning out for Man United, which makes me feel like vomitting up the entire contents of my stomach. Through the nostrils.
Why would you swap someone who has constiently championed our club, is the embodiment of the kind of mentatily we lack, and is the best in the world in his position.  And swap him for someone who has rarely constiently delievered on his promise, and apparently would much rather be at Barcalona.  Rashford is a very good player - but were not talking Prime Salah here.

I get you, but it's probably not as straight forward as that.  Martinez has been a great GK and personality for the Villa, but hasn't had a brilliant season (lots of reasons, some out of his control).  He's also at the age that now is probably the last point we will get good money for him because of his age.

Teams need to evolve and perhaps our need to have a Rashford (4 years younger in a position that is mega important for the way Emery likes to play) outweighs our need to keep Martinez, who we could replace with somebody younger with the potential to be as good.

I'd like to have both next season personally.  But I also want to keep the really good other players who are our future, people like Rogers, Ramsay, Tielemans, all of which will be coveted by 'bigger' clubs in the summer.

I've wondered whether the competition we're in will dictate the players we see next season, and to some extent it will.  But I think Martinez goes regardless.  Probably Watkins too.

The great news, is the main man is going to be here coaching whatever squad we have.

Because I don't think he was the best in the world at his position last season. Then, even if we had another year out of him, we'd probably be looking to replace after that.

I love Martinez, he's worth more than just what he does on the pitch for us, but Rashford is on another level to what we are used to - that's why I said "I wouldn't have a massive problem with it" rather than "yeah, let's get all over that".

Personally I would rather have Emi than Rashford.

Hes a good player - but I dont think hes on another level.  Hes more technically gifted than was Ollie Watkins, but I am not sure if hes a massive upgrade on him through the center.

Looks good on the left - but we didnt seem to want to play him there.

Which was strange after a really great start in that position.

Emi has had one ‘iffy’ season since he’s been with us - this one. I’m judging him over his total time with us which has been pretty much elite. He’s allowed one off season. It’s not necessarily an indicator of a decline. He’s not had the same mileage on the clock as other players due to his early career phase and is a goalkeeper. So hardly on the way down and looking to be replaced. He’s also been voted (twice) as the best in the world in his position in the past 2 seasons.

Rashford has not, so cannot be considered to be on a different level as that, albeit in a different position. You can’t get better than the best.

Elite goalkeeper are at a premium and difficult to replace. We have one with a proven track record in this league. Wide attacking players like Rashford (who prefers to chop in from the left) are not. Emery moved to playing him up top which he has obviously played in before but is not his natural position. It would seem to be a strange swap all round if true and one that only really benefits one club: Man Utd, who get to get rid of a player they don’t want on massive wages for one we don’t want to lose and who would be extremely difficult to replace.

Atletico Madrid apparently taking an interest in Emi. If we lost him that wouldn’t be a bad place for him to end up. Absolutely not to any club in the PL.

Not the worst option for all parties with Gallagher going the other way. Emery was interested in Gallagher before and I think he could develop him into a McGinn type position.

Quite a big Argentine contingent at Atletico and Emi and his antics would be a good fit there.

Yep, I imagine he and Simeone are somewhat kindred spirits.

Although Atletico already have one of the few keepers who could claim to be as good as Emi, and would they bung us the kind of money we'd want for someone who may be only slightly better than what they have?

The stories linking Martinez to Atletico are working on the assumption that Oblak goes to Saudi.

Assuming the money works out he'd go there with my blessing. Another mad club where he can be a genuine hero, not some soulless corporate default winner where anything short of a treble gets the manager the sack. Basically, go to any club which doesn't pollute Youtube with yappy twentysomething influencer haircuts who think football began in about 2010 and can't stop babbling about goats and crypto, and whose entire personality seems to be some bioluminescent energy drink sponsor.

Jan Oblak is a fantastic keeper, I would take money and Oblak in exchange for Emi if he was to depart.

It wouldn't be much of an adjustment, and he'd want similar wages, which would mean there not much point even it it were possible

If he goes to A Madrid or ManU he can get to fuck and I hope his career nosedives into oblivion.
