That first shot on target stat is galling but maybe the stats can be spun i.e maybe we don't "concede" many shots on target in total so chances are higher than average that the first one might go in?

If Carragher was a decent fella he wouldn't be spitting at school girls.

I think thats big part of it.  It sounds stupid - but we often dont look like conceding apart from when they score.

I mean we dont give up many chances but the ones we tend to are golden opportunities

The gobshite that is Carragher has said " If Martinez was the best in the world he would not be playing for a team like Villa "

Although I do think his crown has wobbled a bit this season he is still if not the best, certainly one of the best in the world.

You would have to be a real cnut to sate otherwise....but then I remembered it was Carragher
Surely the same with the other players that win these awards.  If Rodri was really the best in world etc etc.  Maybe he would play for a team like Arsenal... oh wait.. he did

If Carragher was the best pundit in the world he wouldn’t be at an outfit like CBS.

What I want to see is how many other teams have conceded from their first shot on target.  Ours sounds bad - and it might be REALLY bad - but we need to know more to know if it's something of an anomaly, if we've been unlucky, or if this isn't far off being "normal".

It looks like about 25% of shots on target result in a goal in the premier league, so I think you'd expect to be conceding from your first shot on target about 25% of the time under normal circumstances?  We're at about 40%

$omething tells me he might be. Not that he is the best, but those US networks are big payers, even for a marginal sport like football.

I think its bad, its a stat you don't want. It is something by now you would have thought we would have corrected.
We keep getting caught cold.

Concentration issues. Getting caught early on and later on. 38% of league goals conceded are in the first 10 or last 10 minutes. That's clearly not good enough. 48% of the goals we score are in the half hour period between 50 - 80 minutes.

Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez and Leon Bailey lined up for Saudi Arabia moves
Exclusive: Capture of Argentina goalkeeper would be significant coup for SPL and Midlands club are planning for his potential departure

Aston Villa pair Emilano Martinez and Leon Bailey are the latest Premier League players targeted for potential moves to Saudi Arabia.

Securing World Cup-winning goalkeeper Martinez would be a significant coup for the Saudi Pro League, even though the 32-year-old has not consistently produced his best form this season.

Martinez has won the Yashin Trophy for the past two years and was also named Fifa’s goalkeeper of the year in 2022, the year he won the World Cup with Argentina, and last year.

While the identities of the clubs interested in Martinez and Bailey are not yet clear, a Saudi source confirmed to Telegraph Sport that the pair have been lined up for moves.

Villa sold striker Jhon Duran to Saudi club Al-Nassr in January, having also sold Moussa Diaby to Al-Ittihad last summer to help comply with financial rules in the Premier League and Europe.

It is anticipated that, regardless of whether the club qualifies for the Champions League, Villa will sell players this summer to help juggle financial rules while trying to improve the squad.

Martinez is one of Villa’s highest earners. Rivals, at home and in Europe, believe the club may feel the time is right to listen to offers for one of their leading players.

Having signed in a deal worth up to £20 million in 2020, Martinez has been one of Villa’s most important players and was vital in the club’s qualification for this season’s Champions League.

Martinez’s initial contract ran until last summer, but the Argentine signed an extension that is due to expire in 2029 and has made him one of Villa’s highest earners.

While Martinez has still produced superb performances this campaign, notably in the 1-0 Champions League victory over Bayern Munich, he has been at fault for some important goals – most recently against Paris St-Germain at Villa Park, Manchester City and in the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Crystal Palace.

It remains to be seen whether Villa will accept a big Saudi bid for Martinez, but there have been indications that the club has been planning for his potential departure.

Reports in Spain have claimed that Villa are among the clubs tracking Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, whose contract is said to contain a £21 million release clause.

Villa are expected to listen to offers for Bailey this summer after the winger fell down manager Unai Emery’s pecking order.

Bailey has not started for Villa since the victory at Brentford on March 8, although the Jamaica international has nursed an injury and made a substitute appearance in the semi-final defeat by Palace.

Villa signed Bailey for £25 million in 2021 on an initial contract that ran until this summer, before the winger signed an extension through to 2027 with the option of a further year.

By a keeper with less of a circus around him.  Has been brilliant but there’s a suitable time to maximise the sale and that is probably now. Will be missed but needs must.

Yeah, similar to Watkins for me.

If the club thinks that we can get good value for him and replace him with someone younger then it's not the end of the world (like it would have felt a year or two ago).

But if not and the club want him to stay and carry on and that's also what he wants - that's fine too.

Boh. If he goes, shows his head really is gone and that's fine, hope he enjoys retirement. If he doesn't, shows he still wants to be the best. Choice is his.
