🚨 OFFICIAL: IFAB approves new rule from next season for goalkeepers.

If the goalkeeper holds the ball for more than 8 seconds, the referee will award a corner kick to the opposing team.

This will definitely be enforced consistently.

My thoughts exactly
I remember the 4 steps rule, keepers just bounced the ball whilst taking 10.
There will always be a loophole of some sort

Clearly some referees will fail to count properly as the likes of Alyson, Onana and the C115ty keep can hold on to the ball for as long as they like.  Also, if they lie on the floor with the ball, is that going to count towards the 8 seconds?

Also, if they drop the ball at their feet, I presume the consider this to be ball in play, as it is now.

Or perhaps a bit of Quo.

Down down, Dibu is down...

Wasn't it an indirect free kick previously or just a yellow for time wasting? It will be interesting when the "holding" count starts as just after a save it can take keepers 10 seconds to stand. And as soon as a "big" team gets punished by a goal from the resulting corner, they will surreptitiously drop it like they did with time added on, kicking the ball away and moaning at the ref if not the captain.

When, if it has, did the rule stop being six seconds?

It hasn’t according to a search I just did.  Just never enforced.

Apart from David James when he played for us, i think it was against Arsenal I think that's the only time it's been enforced

Law 12.2 currently says goalkeepers can only hold onto the ball for six seconds but it has not been properly applied for years, which is why it has become such an effective, and frustrating, way to waste time.

No problem with the new rule providing the goalkeeper wears a flat cap and games are recorded in black and white.

The corner thing does really make much sense. If anything, and in keeping with the existing law it should be an indirect free-kick.
