Reported on Beeb. Good he's getting a break but I am slightly concerned that his reputation precedes him when bans are being doled out. Seems a harsh punishment to me.

Aston Villa keeper Emi Martinez has apologised for offensive behaviour while on international duty with Argentina.

The 32-year-old has been handed a two-match international ban for slapping a television camera after defeat with his country in one fixture and for a lewd gesture made in the aftermath of another.

He will miss games against Venezuela and Bolivia in October but will be available for Aston Villa.

"I accept the sanction of Fifa and I apologise if I offended anyone, the moment of celebration is to make many kids smile and not disrespect anyone," he wrote on Instagram.

"I will support my friends on this FIFA date with the pain of not being able to be there.

"It was never my intention to disrespect anyone, nor did I understand that a gesture well received by people was offensive, but I will try not to offend anyone anymore and just focus on winning titles with Argentina and Aston Villa."

Never mind up puerile knob jokes with trophies, how about getting your hands to the odd shot once in a while?

Someone mentioned it in one of the other threads, but I don't like Martinez as captain with McGinn off field for an extended period of time. Not sure who should get it though. But being as players other then captains can be booked for asking a ref about decisions, we need an outfield player to be able to do that as Martinez can't really sprint up the field to get in the refs ear.

Watkins might be a good choice in McGinns absence

You can summarise what he said as:

Copulate off, you humourless FIFA tossers.

It’s a long time after the event, isn’t it?
I’m amazed he remembered anything to comment about.
He’s our Number One!*

This reaction seems meteorically rapid though, compared to the glacial pace of the international reaction to Manc City’s 100+ financial er peccadillos. FIFA moved so slowly that the time to respond ran out. The FA is made of sterner stuff. This might be more important than what a goalkeeper did.

*I know he’s 23 this season!

I think it may have been the Young Boys game whereby their captain was the keeper and as they were doing the coin toss he appeared to gesticulate that a particular outfield player would be the one to approach the ref on behalf of the captain.

Edit. Not sure what happened with the quote there, apologies.
