Its like Joe - to be the best - you have to give us the best years of your career.

It's hard to see what else he might do that mean that the last three years turn out to not be the best years of his career.

Indeed - his rise, ultimately resulting in playing an integral role in winning the World Cup (and the Copa America) with a global and national icon isn’t going to be topped. But hopefully winning the league and Champions league with us will be close!

Best keeper we’ve had since Bozzie
I'd put him ahead of bozzie, personally, just needs to have a cup to his name with us and I'd say that for certain. Rimmer was before my time so not sure where he'd stand in the all time list

I'd still put Rimmer before them both but it's a different game now.

Martinez is up there now with Rimmer.  Jimmy played with a better defence so never really was as exposed.  Martinez is the real deal but needs to cut out some of his cockiness, its clear what will happen soon.  (IMO Bozzie nowhere close to either of them)

That's how I would gauge him. Currently second to Junmy Rimmer as the best keeper since I've been following Villa.

Wouldn’t change a thing about Martinez. His cockiness is part of what makes him a great goalkeeper. It’s what makes him great at getting in the heads of his opponent. Jimmy Rimmer was before my time, but Martinez is the best Villa keeper I’ve seen since supporting the club. I said it to someone recently that I wouldn’t swap Martinez for any other keeper out there right now and I stand by that. He makes impossible saves, transmits assurance to his defence even with his cockiness (as well as the related entertainment value) and there is nobody else I’d want in net for any penalty situations. Nobody.

As a Villa fan of 40 years, I can safely say Martinez is by far the best keeper I’ve seen for us.

I quite often think we're fairly lucky as Villa supporters to have had a pretty strong set of goalkeepers over the years. At least in the early years of my support - Spink > Bozzie > James > Friedel. Strong run of keepers all being told.

But Martinez is the best I've seen by a margin. The guy oozes confidence.

Yeah, we've been fortunate, aside from that 10 year barren period when the majority were crap. Even during the previous shit show (SGT II and Dolly) Tommy Sorensen was mainly between the sticks and pretty decent.

Bozzie still out in front for me on nostalgia. I'm 35 so too young for Spink and definitely too young for Rimmer.

No Way was Bozzie up there with Martinez.  The only keeper to have an argument over would be Rimmer.

I loved Bozzie. We could sign Lev Yashin reincarnated and he'd still be second.

Martinez running him as close as he can though. There was a great piece on Pravda where Bozzie interviewed Emi a few months back. Worth watching for those who haven't seen it.

I'd love to know what Nigel Spink, a keeper who rarely strayed beyond the penalty spot, made of the twice Emi Martinez came out of his area and headed clear on Friday night. The change to the backpass and thrown in laws verf the last 30 or so years has speeded the game up and necessitated the need for a modern goalkeeper to be a footballer rather than a netminder. Changes in sports science and players' diets have also impacted on this to make keeper the most changed position in the game during that period.

Bosnich’s private video collection is also more interesting

Only the public ones.

Garth Crooks a pundit for BBC said this on EM selection on team of the week
Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa)

"The save by Martinez from Jack Harrison at point-blank range was stunning. The World Cup winner with Argentina must be on an amazing high and full of confidence since his enormous success in Qatar. Martinez has been in sparkling form since his return to Aston Villa and was crucial in his side's 2-1 win over Leeds United.

The 30-year-old doesn't seem to have been affected by the criticism that has been levelled at him since his Qatar antics, which included throwing the ball away and attempting to unnerve Aurelien Tchouameni during that epic penalty shootout in the final. Martinez was also pictured holding a toy baby with a mask of Kylian Mbappe during his country's celebrations in Buenos Aires. Boys will be boys"

Unfortunately, the reputation and some of Emi behaviour has tarnished his good work as an actual goal keeper

It hasn't but the

"Martinez has been in sparkling form since his return to Aston Villa" line is luvvy-speak too, considering this was only his second game since returning.
