I don't think people need to be quite so precious about him. He's a professional sportsman; and he should be back doing his day job. He's a very good goalie, but he's clearly a bit of a dick* and I don't think he needs his ego massaging too much.

* "shithousing" = "being a dick"
What's interesting is that Emery will almost certainly have words with Martinez about how he conducts himself when he plays for Villa.
This was stated during his press conference.
Emery wasn't overly impressed, but he's wise to say it's his national team's responsibility when he's with them.
If Martinez is to become captain, he must be mindful of how he conducts himself as an Aston Villa football club representative.

I get that Emi’s celebrations were a bit tasteless, but the fuss about it has gone way over the top now - “tainted their win”, give me a break.

I agree. He's been a bit of a prick, but if that's a crime then the courts are going to be backed up for a long time.

Emery should probably have a quiet word with him, but I don't think it needs to go any further than that, and IMO he's not done anything particularly terrible. Just got a bit carried away, which given what he's achieved ...

I can only imagine the outrage has Maradona been playing in the social media age. Emi Martinez along with his teammates had a bit of fun at the expense of Mbappe. That included Messi who is a club teammate of his. Maradona would have been snorting cocaine off multiple hookers while pissing on a picture of Mbappe. What Emi did in context is nothing at all. I doubt irrespective of how it has been portrayed that he’s been on some every day 24 hour bender since being in Argentina. He’s always come across as a dedicated family man. Did he have fun? Fuck right he did but so much of this has been blown way out of proportion.

The only one things that has pissed me off, is Villa's lack of effort to get him back for Monday's game.

All the Argentina players who play in the Premier League and started last week are missing the Boxing Day games. Romero (Tottenham), Mac Allister (Brighton), Alvarez (Man City) and Martinez (Villa).

What lack of effort? He just won the WC. He then flew to Argentina from Qatar. They had all kinds of parades. It was utter madness. Should the club have told him he must be back for the game on Monday and he mentally and physically ready to play? How would that have gone down? Do you think he’d have looked at us and said “yeh I want to stick with this lot long term”. Or was it better we understood this was a once in a lifetime experience and he should be able to enjoy it? I think that garners way more loyalty and appreciation from the player than laying down some law and ultimately pissing him off.

The problem is from having a World Cup in the middle of the bastard season.

And in typical Villa style, the first time it happens is also the first time one of players goes all the way and is impacted by it.

Precisely. I lay all the blame with Argentina and Emi being ace, coupled with our general historical misfortune. For those upset at Emi being away we should just buy player from shit nations. Oh and Germany and Belgium. And those useless Italians who didn’t even make it.

he should have flown straight back after the game, maybe a couple of selfies with Salt Bae and then immediately back to training the following morning

anything less is frankly a piss poor attitude

It's the apex of his career. I think it's justified to book some annual leave to enjoy it.

Ha you would think so right. He’s beyond a fucking parody. But he’s very real and the antics on the pitch were reprehensible. But it was FIFA that allowed it to happen, and especially that bent prick Infantino.
