When it went to penalties did anyone think even for a nanosecond France would win? I didn’t.

Apart from Martinez, who would have been prepared to set fire to his grandmother on the penalty spot to get an advantage, they had Loris, who was odds on to do a Shilton 1990 and not get near any of them.

Martinez is a winner, and he’s our winner.

I’m also glad he did the cock gesture with the trophy in front of the random Qatari dignitary. Fuck them.
Yes. A gesture which, albeit vulgar in the context of a formal ceremony transmitted to billions around the world, should not detract from the corruption, bribery, human rights, LGBT+, ethical and environmental concerns that have surrounded this tournament.

It has to be said, but I think the Qatari pictured seemed to be impressed.

Put this in the WC thread but probably better here..

They arrive 2am local time on Tuesday so hopefully they'll be allowed a few hours shut eye and have the celebrations later that day. Wednesday at the latest. You'd also imagine they'll be given a couple of days to be with their families there. Private jet back to Brum on Saturday? He's played before having arrived back 24-48 hours from BA (Copa America win?) but your guess is as good as mine as to whether he'll play on Boxing Day.

Update: The plane was delayed leaving Doha, refueled in Roma where it currently is so we're looking at a 2-3am arrival in BA. It's the number 1 plane being tracked on Flightradar. Good news is there's talk of tomorrow being declared a national holiday in Argentina so the open top bus tour goes ahead earlier than I anticipated. Also the good lads of the Argentina squad don't want any politicians getting involved so they'll be no bullshit ceremony with the president etc.

If he wanted, Emi could be back in Brum Thursday but I doubt he will.

The Athletic article stated they didn't expect him to play on Boxing Day. I thought wtf? There's no reason for him not to, unless injured. The victory parade is Tuesday in BA. I expect he'll travel back Thursday, maybe even late Wednesday.

Regarding speculation on him leaving Villa, he's Argentina's no.1 and now a world cup legend for them. I expect his main priority will be defending that title in 4 years time, and where will be best for him to prepare to do that.

Nah, we don't know what he had for lunch or if he's used the in-flight 'amenities' yet, and no one has mentioned his kids by their first names.

Ha! In my defence, Emi is the exception and deservedly so. I don't think I'd be that concerned where and what he does or when he gets back if we had a half decent back up keeper. Eastie would be stalking Emi's wife to see if she's buying turkey for Christmas Day or whether she's on a flight with the kids to join Emi in BA for the celebrations tomorrow.

There is a video doing the rounds of a guy riding a bike into the centre of Buenos Aires when the last penalty goes in.  Worth looking up just to hear the noise.

That's quite the detour, why did it go to Rome?

To show off the World Cup to the Pope, and Emi had to go to confession after he "let himself, his country and his club down".
