Had an annus mirabilis he may have never lived up to, but he really wasn't like some Darren Bent figure, having the whole of a relegation-struggling team geared around getting him tap-ins. He was immense for the team as well, in our buildup play and all of that stuff. Strange how it fell off for him a bit, but that happens sometimes.

Didn't help him at Liverpool that he was signed by Rodgers and within a few months Klopp was in and he didn't seem keen on Benteke. He also had a spell at Palace where he was doing the same as he did at Villa, but his teammates were constantly missing the chances he set up and he seemed jinxed with how his own efforts weren't going in.

You could tell when Benteke was low on confidence. He'd fall to the ground more easily, claiming for freekicks.

When on form, he'd bounce defenders out of the way.

Benteke did a great job for us especially 1st season.

Liverpool's style under Rogers was all wrong for him.

That said Ollie is still our best all round forward since Yorke

I reckon Benteke getting injured in his second season with us was a bit of a sliding doors moment for the club. We got a beating from Man U in his last game but had a run-in where we'd have been looking for 8-10points and a top half finish but without him we just fell to pieces and got ourselves drawn right into the relegation battle and I don't think us or Lambert ever got over it. I don't think we'd have gone on a crazy run or that Lambert would've turned out to be great but, for me, that was the first time I really felt like we'd given up and were just circling the drain hoping for a miracle.

Liverpool was never the right move for him though, he wa sa player that improved when the crowd were with him and the Liverpool fans almost immediately decided he wasn't good enough.

He only played about 6 games under Rogers.

Back on topic, Watkins is buzzing and almost proves my point the other day about how his head was holding him back. There's a completely different air to him now, he knows he belongs.

confidence and belief are high at the moment for Ollie - and it really does impact his performance and output - we're starting to see a lot more of Watkins' personality recently.

Yes, he’s a bright lad and has his head screwed on. He has a taste for silverware now so I’m hoping for a big season from him.
