How many assists did Billy Walker chip in with?

Oh yeah, soz, forgot, they don't count know and they didn't count in 1926 either.

Loads I suspect, as an inside forward. Our Dad used to say Billy was knock-kneed, and defenders didn’t have a clue which way he was going to go.

Assists don't count when the subject is goals, no.

Well, he’s not assisting people up the stairs is he?

"Assists" is like a rubbish Top-Trump category designed to fill up the card.

Doesn't matter.

When the subject at hand is scoring top scorers, assists aren't relevant

True, but most people understand that talking about whether a striker is good or not takes a little more effort than looking at the top scorer list, that's the bit you've ignored for 18months.

Strikers are judged on goals first and foremost.

Footballers are judged on their contribution to their team, of which strikers and goals is one useful metric.

Agreed, I think Smirker forgets just how excited he was when we signed Emile Heskey.

Ollie’s scored at a decent rate, worked hard for the team, assisted others, been bullet proof, but above all, essential to the way we play, but Smirker still wants to replace him with someone like Thiago.

My mate organises an annual prediction competition: top four, relegated, Cup semi-finalists  etc.  He then includes a few interim predictions, e.g. how many league goals will X score by 31st January.   That one is usually the kiss of death for the player concerned: this season it was Chris Wood.  So imagine my displeasure when yesterday he gave me the paperwork and pointed out that this season he's chosen "your man, Watkins"...

It is the most useful metric, by a long way. The only one that truly matters. You are absolutely in denial of you think otherwise.

No goalscoring strikers  ;D

About as useful as a goalkeeper who can pass out from the back but save next to nothing.

You are absolutely in denial of you think otherwise.

Your mistake here is thinking that everyone else is also bunkered down in the emotional foxhole of Their Opinion, which needs to be argued whatever the evidence to the contrary might be.

I don’t particularly "think otherwise", it's not really something I have much attachment to either way.
