Other then when he panicked in January 2020, Dean Smith had a solid record in the transfer market.

I don't think panicked is a fair description. We spent pretty much every penny we could without breaking any rules in the summer and then had season ending injuries for 2 players in the same game, we had very little money but needed to try to find a striker and keeper who could keep us up. We did ok on the keeper side and Reina had a good half season but clearly both strikers were well below the standard we needed. I suspect Watkins in the summer was planned for before the injury to Wesley so both guys who came in were only ever meant to be cover through to the end of the season.

Some spectacular successes anyway, Ollie obviously. Luiz, Konsa, Cash, Martinez, Mings. But the Grealish money was not well spent, that did for Deano in the end. I thought both Buendia and Bailey were very good signings at the time.

Even the Ings thing looked pretty sensible at the time - he was what, 28 and coming off two solid and one excellent season with Southampton?

He played well against us at Villa Park anyway. But he was the wrong signing, Ollie was never going to work with somebody else up top. That one had Purslow's fingerprints all over it. Emery sorted that within weeks.

I sometimes think that the only partner Ollie Watkins could have up front would be a left-footed Ollie Watkins.

I would say better than solid. Even now, Deanos signings still form the core of our best team.
