What happened in the second half in the way they were set up.

Not read through, has the kit been bigged up much?
I was confused, kept thinking we had the ball  :-[

Yep, me too.

Glad it’s not just me. I think for teams that play in red or blue, they play an opposition in their colours fairly regularly and get used to it, but for me, the team in claret and blue is Villa, it doesn’t matter how far into the game it is, I keep having moments when I think they are us!

Oddly I think Benteke would be a perfect fit for us.  He reads Jack so well.  I was never a fan of back heel passes until I saw those two play together.
Me too, imagine the lift it would give to the ground, invaluable.

I would hope not for Benteke. He was engineering a move away as soon as he could and was convinced  to stay by us having to splash cash on a new contract which probably came from our limited transfer budget at the time. We then only had a 3rd season out of him because of his injury. Also since that, he has never really shown the form he had before then at his other teams so it might have affected him more, hence not the same player.

Just a dream I know but can you remember when Christian Benteke leaped so high that he had to head it DOWN to get under the crossbar?

I remember it Brian, 6-1 v Sunderland wasn't it?  A colossal leap.

Highlights

Heaton should be saving that header from Wood

A header from 2 yards out?

Thought that at the time but watching the replay Wood didn't seem to get much power in it. Heaton didn't react well enough for me. By the time he got a hand to it, it was already well over the line.

Great in the 1st Half, rode our luck in the 2nd, good job they were shite.
Unforgivable miss in 2nd half by Douglas Luis, should have put the game to bed but added to and prolonged the familiar agonising feeling that goes with being a Villa fan this season.
So glad we got the 3 points and 6 over the Xmas period although I was expecting 9.

Another wrong decision going against us with VAR!
No one was even claiming it was an offside and the Lineo didn't flag it or the Ref notice.
Its ruining the spontaneity of the game for me. Can't celebrate properly any more.

A cross to the back post and a free header from 2 yards out, yet the keeper is at fault. Don’t know where “didn’t get much power” came from as well as it is over the goal line within a fraction of a second of it hitting his head.

You do realise replays are in slow motion and not real time?

Most ridiculous VAR yet. If his foot had been flat on the floor, it's probably not behind the line they've added on the screen. There's no room for common sense and it took so long that the players will be getting cold and risking injury.

Well, after a few minutes I felt that the team looked so comfortable, building from the back and utilising three good footballing CB to great effect. The narrower set-up suits our players: we looked more of a unit and seemed less knackered chasing from wide. Even Trez looked effective.
Taylor - whilst clearly not a first-choice player - did okay, and if he could only cross better he might still have some value in the squad. Both Luiz and Nakamba played well, although Luiz had two gilt-edged chances in the second half to extend the lead: on the first, he should have squared for Wesley; on the other, his attempted lob was embarrassing.
I hope Kodjia is moved on quickly - he really adds nothing to the mix, and we need fighters and finishers. On the other hand, Wesley is shaping up, does appeat to understand his role better and was excellent at linking play today.

Final point: I hope the woman in Row S or T (Seat number roughly 20) is okay: after the second goal, young idiots cahrged down the steps and fell over and onto her - she was completely oblivious to what ws going on but ended up on a stretcher.

It wasn’t wrong as he was a mm offside after running it through 3 mins of computer technology. The problem is that they have changed the rules to state offsides and attacking players handballs are absolutes but any other decision needs to be a clear and obvious error.

Also their fullback did raise an arm to claim offside on the initial challenge but that was probably just instinct as by the time the ball dropped for the challenge, Wesley was further back and would have looked more offside.

Someone once swore that against Sunderland he jumped so high he had time to wave to the traffic on the M6 before scoring, but that might have been an exaggeration.

Yes Dave, (hope your family are on the mend) do you remember the photo of his third goal?  The other players' (who were also jumping as high as they could) heads were level with Benteke's waist. It is those kind of memories that keep me going.
