Pearce was commentating on the (live) stream I watched on.

But was that the MOTD commentary? As often they do more than one.  alive broadcast for a channel and then a voice over for another.

I can't recall the details but also in the introduction to the Brentford v Newcastle game the commentator started with a response to a gag Lineker had made in the studio about Shearer playing when Brentford last beat them some time in the middle of the last century. Or something like that.

Yes it was. He said he commentated that day, in direct t response to Lineker in the studio.

Well as the studio bits are live, then it would mean having to commentate live for the package which could throw up all sorts of technical issues. The opening crawl might have been re-recorded with Lineker telling Pearce he was going to make that joke.

In the old days they definitely used to get the GOTM segments rerecorded when they didn't show all matches in the same details and only had commentary on 2 or 3 a week.

Just caught the MOTD highlights for our game. I think Pearce commentating was just phoning it in as "a win would all but mathematically guarantee a place in the playoffs, and a victory would take them awfully close to the automatic last 16".

Then mentioned it again after McGinns goal.

Am I missing something?

We won, so we’re all but mathematically guaranteed to at least be in the play-offs, and we’re also awfully close to finishing top eight, which would automatically take us into the last sixteen.

The last 16 are not automatic. 8 automatically qualify.

Oh okay. I interpreted that as awfully close to the top 8, which is automatic qualification for the last 16.

I think he might have meant that, ie awfully close to automatically being into the last 16, but I'm sure his wording was how I typed it.

It's the same thing  Top 8 is the automatic last 16 rather than play off for the last 16.

She's decent enough, from what I've seen. And she's a woman, so will annoy idiots. Good.

Logan is excellent, IMO. Sounds like Cates, Logan and Mark "no, not that one, Yoko" Chapman are all doing the job. Not sure if they're taking it in turns or having three at once.

I'm sure VillaTim will be angry, regardless.
