Fair play to her , on new years morning she made the effort to come to my mates house to wish his son happy birthday. He’s had a really tough challenging life and she spent over an hour taking to him and brought him a shirt.

Yes, far more than UK and US English for example, it's the same with Spanish and South American Spanish speakers. They can generally understand each other but you have to be aware a lot of grammatical differences.

We had this conversation at work last week because we've just added a couple of new data architects who live in Belgium but are from Brazil and Peru to works with our Spanish and Portuguese business.

As far as Spanish goes, Spanish Spanish is impossible to understand. Latin American Spanish is clearer, although Argentinian is also impossible. My poor Spanish notwithstanding.
