He's about the same age as Gareth Barry was when he first played centrally under O'Leary (or it might have been Sir Graham) and that wasn't much of a success.

O'Neill turned him into an excellent CM was it not?

Sarcasm?

It's certainly how i remember it. He started off as a central defender or left back, moved into centre midfield and didn't do well there, went back into defence then O'Neill moved him-him back to midfield.

I think you're right - didn't he play centre-mid in O'Leary's first game against Portsmouth, got sent-off and it was never tried again?

I don't think he ever went back to defence though, that's when he spent a few seasons playing left-midfield under O'Leary and then O'Neill put him central with Moore and Gabby either side of Angel.

He played left back for a while and made his England debiut there I think. He couldn't play as a centre half unless as part of a 3 and he was not much more than a competent full back.

I thought he was a very good full back. I remember a few games where I came out saying to my mates ‘he’s gonna be a great centre-mid, he runs games from full-back’.

Re the thread title, is he still to be triple-confirmed or is the double one enough?

I cant see them being able to pay anything like what it'd take for us to even consider selling.

No thanks. We’re building a side and I think he’s a really important part.

Mourinho will probably offer a swap with Smalling.

Would you take Jordan Veretout back for Luiz, though...?

Veretout has been excellent for Roma. I would not swap a 23 year old Douglas Luiz for a 28 year old Veretout.
