Will be looking to reignite the Can Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings play together discussion thread for next season.
That will be something to keep an eye on.

Tyrone Mings has had to learn to be comfortable on the ball and in possession, and he does not have Pau's ability. I believe there is a position in the squad for him, and they may even play together on occasion, but it has to be seen how either would cope with receiving the ball as a right-sided centre back.
And because of Ming's injuries, never got to see if there was going to be a partnership or how it would function.
Perhaps Konsa, Pau, and Mings would have formed the first-choice back line, with left back Moreno (Digne) advancing, but injuries prevented this. On occasions It may have been Cash as a right back and then Konsa, Mings and Pau.

Look at the goals A column ,  we have massively missed Mings .

Although we might not have scored as many either from playing out from the back. Swings and roundabouts. Get a defender who can pass like Torres and defend with Mings desire and it would be the perfect player in that division.
OR...........3 x centre backs, Konsa-Mings-Torres.

You can shoot me now, but I would like to see that partnership.

I was going to post something similar (Torres in the centre though). Leverkusen this season seems to have used three at the back with Frimpong at least bombing on. Some sites state 5-2-3 although I saw it more as a 3-4-3. We kind of do similar attacking wise anyway but seem to go 4-4-1-1 when defending where they go 5-2-2-1.

🔫 Mings was a disaster in that position when we tried it under Smith, as was Konsa. Torres likely more comfortable in the middle of the three than the other two. I really don't want to see it but Emery will give it a go if Mings comes back fully fit. 343 type setup means McGinn, Bailey, Diaby, Buendia, Rogers, Ramsey fighting for the 2 spots either side of Watkins.
Would prefer to see us stick to the 442 with the narrow "box" in midfield. We forget just how good Ramsey and McGinn were last season playing in their best positions.

When Emery first started, we moved into a 6-3-1(ish) when defending.

Not sure how long we did that for because I seem to remember Emery stating that the players had some input on the tactics (it was the players who wanted to push higher up the pitch apparently), so they may have talked him out of the that at some point.

As for Leverkusen, they have been at a 3-4-3 in attack & 5-2-3 when defending for the times I have watched them. They played a really high line the past two times I have watched them & had pretty much everybody in the opposition half when they had possession of the ball. Lots of silky passing from side to side before they tried to crack the opposition over & in those two games, they scored 10 & conceded 0.

They really are ridiculously good & if they can go the whole season undefeated, in both league & two cups, then they really deserve that title from Arsenal. Or maybe a better title. Cos Arsenal lost in the cups, so didn't technically have a full season unbeaten.

Leverkusen could actually go the whole season unbeaten...

If we play three at the back, CDBullyWee will never come back. As it is, I still hold out hope he will.

If Unai can make a back 3 work when we have the ball and look to work it forward then it will surely be a huge advantage to have the centre half who attacks the ball defending set pieces back in the side.

Mings in particular you can see needing a bit of time to bad back into his role - for me his biggest weakness pre this injury was when he had to turn sharply to chase a ball in behind which is probs a legacy of his early career injuries.  What would be great is if as part of this rehab which looks to have been extensive and cutting edge he may come back stronger.  If i remember other players coming back from ACLs they tend to pick up little niggles for a few months as part of the rehab so we need to have patience with Ty / Emi & Bouba when they return

Three at the back would undoubtedly make us more secure at the back, but at what cost?  Let's say Pau is the one given licence to step out into midfield when we're in possession, that means he's likely taking the place in the starting line-up of either Doug or Kamara (when fit), which means that double pivot will likely be less efficient at moving the ball quickly and finding a pass to break the lines - it would also make it easier to outnumber us midfield, which might mean lower possession stats.  That's not to say Unai couldn't make it work, I just think that he's found a way for us to play that is clearly working - the table doesn't lie - and it would be silly to change it just to reintegrate a player coming back from a year out. Much as I love Ty.

Do we need to be better defensively? Absolutely. But we have also conceded fewer than all the teams below us except Everton. So we have the 5th best defensive record in the league (and the 5th best scoring record), so it's not like we need major surgery here.  I don't have the stats to back me up on this, but it definitely feels like we've conceded more per game since Kamara was injured, so I suspect getting a specialist in to compete with him might be all we need to reintroduce a bit of defensive stability.  I think his ability to drop back and make a back-five when required has really been missed.  If that addition is also 6ft+ to help with set pieces, all the better!

Martinez almost plays as the 3rd centre back when we pass it around the back.

Not sure where the extra CB would put themselves in that situation. Wouldn’t it also rob us of an extra player further forward?

I don’t see UE changing the structure of the team to go 3 at the back.
He has a lot of flexibility with the structure he has right now.
I can see Tyrone if fit playing in certain games or even Pau and him as in game changes.

I'd be very surprised if Konsa, Mings, Pau, and Left Back weren't the plan.

The Emery asymmetrical 4-4-2 relies on one full back tucking in and one full back bombing forward. Worked a treat in our strong finish to 22-23, especially when Moreno came in.

When we signed Pau it looked to me like his first choice back four was Mings and Pau in the CB positions, Konsa to be the tucked in right back and Moreno to be the bombing forward left back. The injuries to Mings and Moreno meant we were basically makeshift at the back all season. He also experimented a bit with Pau at LB and Cash bombing forward in pre-season

In Emery's system the right back should basically be a right sided centre back and the left back should almost be a winger.
