He'll probably get the captaincy back.

Emery has already said he's leaving it as it is this season.

The stats are pretty meaningless without context though. Generally when he's not played, the back ups have either been Hause or Chambers. Hause is a big immobile carthorse, and Chambers is just rubbish. What the stat really tells you is that we haven't invested sufficiently since we've been back in the Premier League to make sure we've got adequate back ups. Good for him on getting his new contract, but he's been the mainstay of a team that's never finished higher than 11th. If we want to improve on that, then at the very least we need some better central defenders to challenge him for the position.
I'd rephrase that as he's been one of the best players in a team that's never finished higher than 11th.  There's plenty in the squad around him that have needed improving on before him though.  Infact other than Grealish and Watkins, we probably haven't had a more consistent and influential player in the team since promotion (I'm obviously not including Martnez and Kamara here).

I absolutely get that he's not Van Dyke, I'm just amazed there's always so much dialouge round him when he's one of our most influential players.

I do agree that we need all round improvement and better competition though.

I think all of our players are pretty much of a muchness ie all decent enough if you want to finish 11th or lower. Watkins is decent enough, but with a wonky first touch and misses chances. Mings is solid enough, but makes mistakes. Luiz can be really good, but lacks consistency. Buendia has a lovely touch and magic feet, but gives the ball away too much, and so on. It was tempting to blame everything on the previous manager, but now we've got a new super European coach with lots of success on his CV, and the players are still pretty much as inconsistent as they've always been.

Both Mings and Watkins have flaws but I’d suggest replacing Bailey and Konsa should be a bigger priority.  Wholesale changes rarely works so three, maybe four, transfers should  be the limit unless lots of players leave.

Using the singular form ("Aston Villa is...") is an Americanism that has started to creep into the English language over here. Its use should not be encouraged.

Good news

I am hoping he and Carlos strike up a partnership when Carlos is fully fit, Konsa then drops to a solid back up option.

Just need another young but quality CB as fourth choice then as Chambers isn’t anywhere near good enough if we want to push for top half and Europe.
