The game turned when they brought on their subs and particularly Carnacho.  He gave Young a tough time and pulled the defence making more space in the middle so whether it was Konsa or Mings there it would have mattered little. Carnacho is a very good player in the making. We played a fairly high line first half to great effect which wasn't the case 2nd half.

Olsen was the main issue last night.

If you start comparing any player to Paul McGrath, you'll always be disappointed.
Yes indeed. That so called great cross from Garnacho would have been a lob to God's forehead.

Bringing a central defender on is always a strange substitution, Mings is at his best when he's got the ability to read the game and set the tone from the start. Coming on a sub he was just chucking himself about like a mad thing, which wasn't what was required at all.

It's an odd thing being a sub. Some people can come on and fire straight away, others need to work up to speed. I always felt I need 10 minutes and a few touches to get into the game

I agree, Lee, I think it’s why managers if they have players who can make an immediate impact as a sub they then sometimes ignore the clamour to pick them from the start.

Is there any reason why he came on? Was someone injured?

It was just a straight swap for Konsa, who didn't appear to be struggling. We'd just conceded the second so I think Emery wanted to tighten up, but it had the opposite effect. To be honest, with Olsen in goal it was all just rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.

Konsa lost possession trying to play out from the back a couple of minutes before (as he had a few times before), I put it down to that.

Me too. But then, Olsen would have been replaced too surely?

I felt bad for Mings, he was thrown in just as Yanited were in the ascendancy and he had little time to get a feel for the game. The flailing and deflecting for the goal like an amateur was unfortunate.

He's an experienced player and should have been able to deal with. I suspect his head was elsewhere after the disappointing news earlier in the day. Might have been expecting a night stewing on the bench. Surprising sub unless Konsa was injured..

I don't believe that Mings was expecting to be picked for England at all, having not featured for ages. He was just dropped in at the deep end last night in a game where Man Utd were getting a grip on the game, and we had one of the Olsen twins in goal, rather than an actual footballer.

I'm not sure yesterday would have thrown him all that much. Apart from a 20 minute period on the internet, triggered (seemingly) by a change in betting odds there was never any serious talk of him going. He hasn't been in an England squad since March, it was never likely that he'd suddenly reappear out of the blue.

In the first half today Mings is having struggles a little bit with the play out from the back, even though he hasn't been helped by either a lack of options or poor passing from the goalkeeper to him.
Konsa also. This is something that demands attention to detail in bringing about more options and more comfort on the ball
It's also the duty of Kamara and Luiz to offer assistance in those situations.

He was very ordinary for the first 10 minutes of the game and then made a remarkable recovery and he and Konsa went from Laurel and Hardy to a proper partnership.  In that sort of form, he's great.
