or the deflection which caused the ball to spin higher than anticipated induced an unfortunate but understandable error

I think you need to watch the highlights again. He had all the time in the world, and the nearest Chelsea player in Sterling was about 6 feet away. It was simply a case of him getting it badly wrong and heading it towards goal instead of away. Absolutely terrible piece of play.

I don't need to watch the highlights - I've already seen them and I was there at the game.

It was an error no doubt - they happen.

Our defensive record on the whole is OK.

His mistake was now worse than, say, Ings not heading downwards, or Bailey misjudging the flight of the cross and mis-timing his jump, or indeed Martinez expecting the ball to curve toward him instead of going straight on.
I agree, the ball spun from the deflection and he got too far under it and as he leaned back it spun off his head backwards, instead of forwards.  It's not like he was deliberately trying to head it back towards goal.  Yes it was a mistake, but I wouldn;t say "he headed it straight to Mount" as that implies intention to head it that way.

Horse has bolted. Mings will only ever improve once Gerrard leaves.

Mings is only 5 months off his 30th birthday. What you see is what you get with him, and he's unlikely to get much better.

Tony Adams was 30 and Steve Bould 33 when Wenger rocked up at Arsenal. Both were figures of fun before and thought to be past it. Both were held in high regard as players by the time they quit.

Tony Adams who had captained England to the Euro 96 semi finals a few months before Wenger arrived? That Tony Adams?

Or the Tony Adams who was dubbed donkey and had any misplaced pass or awkward moment derided, even though he was an extremely skilful and aware player, especially for a 1980s centre back. Like I said, dominant discourse trumps reality.

It wasn't understandable or unfortunate let's be honest. He had more than enough time to adjust his feet to clear it with a simple header. He just got it all wrong, Bambi on ice stuff. 100% at fault for that goal.

Martinez takes the bulk of blame for the second, equally shocking. He made the cardinal sin of taking a chance of moving away from the side he was covering. Even at that, I thought he showed the agility of a Kalinic or Bunn to correct his feet quickly. The shot was nowhere near the corner. At fault for both goals at Arsenal? Mistakes adding up and nowhere near as good with the ball as he used to be.

Oh he made plenty. I’ve witnessed him score a fair few own goals. Brilliant play 99.9% of the time mind.

It was perfectly understandable from where I was sat. He was preparing to jump just as it deflected and it hit him one the head on his way down. The ball could have gone in any direction as he had no way to control it. Classed as an error, but an understandable one, from a player that has rarely mistimed an header.

Tyrone isn’t a top 6 PL CH. But neither is he the reason we are where we are at in the table.

My old man used to say that Blues had some really good goalkeepers, but they had to be as they were the busiest player on the pitch. In other words, if he was in a top 6 side he probably wouldn't be facing so much last-ditch defending.
