Emery likes his central defenders to play put from the back.
As they'll split and with Tyrone naturally let footed and an original left back I feel he'll be ok positionally and Emery will look to improve his concentration when making his passes forward.
There may be the odd error or two as Villa look to use a build up play but I feel Mings will be more comfortable and ready for the new beginning under a first class coach who we must think will rate Mings.

Mings is England team class at what he is doing. Our defence look very solid with him ie run up and tackle/ stop break aways from the opponents, aerial dominance etc. Problem is he hasnt (to a lesser degree than Cash but still) the bodily calmness and control of his body and his foot on the ball and technical ability in this to play out from the back at ease. Under pressure he will rush and hoof it (as Cash will do even more). This is way Diego Carlos where bought IMO and you could easily see he was so much better in this matters. I dont feel Mings (or Cash) will be more comfortable in this in the new beginning as this is something that not are things that you get much better on by exercise or something else IMO. Sorry.

In a 4-2-3-1 with Dedoncker and Luiz in front of him, he hasn't got to play it out very far before somebody much better on the ball gets it, and hopefully then sets us off on an attack. The problem comes when we play 4-3-3, and he has to try to pass it further to somebody like McGinn, who would then quite often give the ball straight away.

Good point.

Don't disagree re Mings but I'm not sure anything could be seen with Carlos over 2 games. He had a shocker v Bournemouth with and without the ball. At fault for Everton's goal and then injured.

Mings inability to turn onto his right side, not to mind his right foot, will always hold him (and eventually us) back. If an opponent forces him onto his right side at all, he will usually turn and hoof it (or worse and run with it instead)  But he's fine for what we need right now.

Unfortunately Konsa isn't helping matters either in terms of building out play from the back. First two balls he got after half time against Fulham he booted them straight out of play under little pressure. Not sure about Cash, he's a bit lazy I think on the ball and takes the easy option at times. The extra body next to Luiz in midfield should help them all.

I've got to be honest, I love it when he goes on one of his runs. No one knows what's going to happen, could be great, could be a disaster.

This is always my thinking about playing out from the back, its down to everyone and obviously midfield to give the defenders options to allow them to do so. Under Gerrard there was just no movement and the stats backed this up as we were the worst team in the league for running about.

movement has been one issue we've had at Villa since I started going in 1994 :D

True.
The system we played on Sunday suits Mings and the rest of the defense down to the ground and you could tell that they seemed to have much less of the ball and much less of that dreadful crab like sideways passing.

Would you make him Captain again? if not who? If Ash is keeping his position I would go for him in the short term.

I think this is it. Gerrard played a system that put a lot of responsibility (too much IMO) on the 2 central defenders. Basically expected him to be bloody Lothar Matthaus every game. He couldn't have been further away from playing to Tyrone's strengths.

Take pressure off him, he'll be perfectly fine for a top half PL side.

If Ash is going to keep starting, then him. Hes always talking to the others, getting them going and being a general shithouse anyway.

If he's not going to be a starter then I'd give it Mings. Ignore the shite from Gerrard about it putting too much pressure on him. He's always been likely to drop an occasional bollock, always has been and always will. He's still great captain material for us.

Apparently Unai likes to put the captaincy to an anonymous player vote, which is probably the best way to do it so no one is pissed off

I really like the way Danks dealt with the captaincy compared to the real hash in man management that was Gerrard. No fuss from Danks, no interviews, McGinn ‘rested’, Martinez skipper.
Personally, id keep it as Emi, i know there can be issues with keepers having the arm band, but he’s clearly a leader on the pitch, clearly vocal, a massive expert in shithousery. At the same not having the arm band doesnt stop Young and Mings being leaders on the pitch.
