Quote from: brontebilly on February 10, 2022, 02:52:41 PMIf Luiz, McGinn, Nakamba or whoever don't have the technical ability (McG or Naka) or moral courage (Luiz) to take the ball off the back on the half turn under pressure then Mings shouldn't be trying to cover for their failures by running it out. It was a clear tactic from Leeds to allow that last night and we fell into their trap. How exactly was that trap and how did we fall into it?We nearly scored from one of those breaks and none of their goals came as a result of Mings carrying the ball out of defence. We made a few defensive mistakes (as a unit) and they were punished, it wasn't because of some masterplan Bielsa came up with to target Mings by letting him have space on the ball.

Playing for England is not the gold standard. McGuire, Stones and Shaw play for England.

That’s one of the points people are making thoughThere is a real lack of quality central defenders not just in this country but across EuropeIf you had 50-70 Mill to spend on a centre half who would realistically come who do you go out and getBecause I’ve got no ideaMings and Konsa are as good as most of the central defenders in the league look at those two at Spurs last night getting absolute pelters todayI am like a stuck record saying that they are decent defenders when they do the basics right but lack quality in technical areas including ball control and composure and I would love us to bring someone in who could take us to the next level in that area but who is it ?Sometimes you just got to make do with what you’ve gotHopefully there might be one or two coming through from the youth and Academy side
Here’s a fact for you. Tyrone Mings has committed more errors leading to opposition goals than any other outfield player in the past 3 Premier League seasons.

What a bullshit stat. Firstly - that title is always going to be held by a central defender because they are the ones whose job is to be in the position to make that mistake.Secondly, if this is across the whole division (the sentence doesn’t actually make that clear as it seats premier league seasons not teams), then it also points to what players around him are doing. Maybe we can look at how often he is left in a position to NEED to clear a ball, or not have any options to clear a ball. Errors don’t happen in isolation. We’ve had a worryingly leaky defensive midfield for 3 seasons, & full backs trying to be wingbacks & not always managing it, & a defensive partner who seems to manage to look amazing alongside Tyrone Mings, but strangely inept when he’s not there.
