I highlighted some stats above re Tyrone making mistakes because it was being discussed and I think it's pointless contending that he doesn't make more errors than a lot of other defenders.

But he is much more than that.  On the field he is a colossus. He is brave, puts his body on the line time and again and has saved us countless times with tackles and blocks.  He leads our defence and takes responsibility to dominate our area from corners and free kicks.  He is a born leader of the team.  Yes he has a mistake in him, but he plays for a progressive manager who wants his defenders to take responsibility on the ball.  If he played for Burnley or Newcastle his mistakes would be far fewer.

Off the field he is class personified, eloquent and stands up for things I want my captain to stand up for.

He played a huge part in our promotion push and consolidating our place in the Premier League.  I honestly believe he is one of the most important signings we have made in the last 10 years.  Even with his mistakes we are a better team when he plays.  I think there's plenty of areas that need improving before we outgrow Mings.

Mistakes or not for me, as the thread title says, he is confirmed as awesome.  I'm proud he is captain of my club and I hope he is for a few more years yet.

Agreed.

Konsa plays for the same manager and doesn’t make nearly as many mistakes so not sure that’s down to Smith’s style of play.

I don't have stats to back this up but I would say we play down the left FAR more than we do the right and Mings has the ball more than Konsa.  Konsa is an excellent player and maybe he will out perform Mings in the long run, but they play slightly different roles for Villa and both are invaluable.  Konsa's excellence doesn't diminish what Mings offers to the team.

I just don't recognise that description of him. His tackling is a bit weak to be honest. When he cuts out the mistakes like he did for a good bit of last season he's a very good defender. A colossus though? Not for me.

I don't disagree with the above post but taking Saturday in isolation, it was a very basic mistake to not put enough weight on the back pass and it came 5 minutes into the second half in away game at a team where you just can't afford to make mistakes like that. We're never going to know what the outcome might have been had we been able to grow into the game more, still only 1-0 down.

I think he's similar to John Stones. Brilliant defenders who have a mistake in them. However, he's an exceptional leader and captain and that trumps it.
