Must admit that I hadn't really looked at the England squad going over to Ireland for the T20's, but when I saw Bethell was captaining it, I thought it must have been very much a development squad.

Just seen the team and it's not far off thie side that played against South Africa!!  Not sure how they came to that decision about Bethell seeing who is playing in it.

I think they're clearly grooming him to become VC soon given he's almost inevitably going to replace Pope.

They’ve included him in the senior leadership team pretty much from the start. They’ve presumably identified him as a potential future England captain and a pretty meaningless IT20 series against Ireland at the back end of the season is a good time to see what he’s like as a leader.
