Great reading that about SJM. Also the bit about Unai watching 30 Villa games back before starting with us, quite incredible.

Apart from his brilliance as a footballer, I love the way he treats his mascots!

Yep you can tell he’s a really good guy. My son was an away mascot a few years ago and walked out with John McGinn. A few months previously we’d been to the junior Christmas party and lined up with hundreds of other kids to meet SJM (and Leon Bailey). McGinn was an absolute gentleman as you’d imagine.

Anyway skip forward a few months and the first thing my son asks Meatball as they walk out on the pitch is ‘do you remember me from the Christmas Party’. Without skipping a beat he replies that, of he course he remembers him, did he enjoy the party, how’s he doing etc

Just a little thing but my lad was absolutely made up that McGinn remembered him - when I strongly suspect he didn’t recognise him from Adam.

That's lovely!

Not sure if I've posted this before but I met him at Brum airport on one of my journeys up to Glasgow. It was the weekend the matches were cancelled due to the Queen's death and he was heading back up home to Clydebank on Easyjet to spend time with family. I sat chatting with him for about twenty minutes. One thing that stuck out was him saying how big a deal it was for the players when they met our glorious European Cup winners. Had a great chat about Glasgow and the Football Memories Scotland (a great initiative involving former players helping people with dementia and Alzeheimer's) meetings at Hampden that I go along to when I'm up there. Quite amusing when it came to having a photo with him - he realised that me being an old git, my mobile phone selfie skills were very poor. Grinning, he took my phone and said "Do you want me to take it mate?" A totally natural bloke who had time for everyone who approached him.

Given the genre, that's pretty good.

Not saying it wasn’t but he seems to have had an awful lot of … ‘best days of his life’

I really hope that the next chapters of his villa career give him what he deserves.

Hes been such a vital part of the clubs re-birth, and epitismes the story of championship to champions league
