He improved as the game went on. But he is a liability on the ball, and for the way Emery will want to play he won’t be a long term starting option. But he helped us see out the game and his effort and tracking back should be commended.

His best 90 minutes for two years, today. Good to see.

Very much so. Did his job well today.  I’ll forgive him that one pass to put Ramsey through in first half.

Much better SJM. I hope it’s the start of his renaissance.

A dogged battler for us today and sometimes that is exactly the type of player that is needed .

It looked to me that he showed a decent bit of pace for the run that resulted in the penalty, that has to be good as he's never been known for his speed.

Better today. Needs to learn how to stop, and look for a pass though

One of his biggest critics here. He had a mad few minutes where he kept needlessly giving the ball away but overall he definitely made a contribution. Was great in the seeing out time shithousing in added time.

He's good in a scrap. Gave the ball away too much again, which drives me mental, but you're never going to be able to question the lad's attitude, and when you don't have the ball he always works his socks off. Well done, John.

So much better in a more forward role, infinitely better than the hybrid holding midfield/auxiliary fullback role he was playing under the prior manager.

Yes. He was quick.

Thought he was much improved yesterday. Hopefully Emery can work with him over the next few weeks and nail his proper role down. I can’t see him sat in the middle over 2 of  Kamara, Donk & Luiz

These are the games McGinn fairs well, when we’re not expecting much possession ourselves and his energy and tenacity is very useful in midfield. He played very well.

Maybe he was selected ahead of Dendonker today for this purpose, again is this Emery actually using the squad accordingly to fit the opposition?
