Just cliche after cliché from McGinn. Has never looked like a captain.

He hasn't played well for what seems like an eternity, either. You're never going to win many games with him and Luiz in the midfield.

First thing that needs to happen is McGinn dropped to the bench.  Of course, Luiz has done him a favour in that regard.

Captain Dog Shit. Shockingly poor on the ball as a top flight player. Championship bloke written all over him.

Sold for £50m to a top 6 team I think you mean.

Did anyone else raise an eyebrow when he talked about having a lot of different cultures and you can talk but you need to go out and play?

Is that a shot at the south american contingent?

He isn't a captain. He is a dressing room jester. A lovely chap but he isn't ever going to bollock someone for playing badly.  Dreadful choice as captain.

In the right set up he can be a useful player. When I see him now he looks distraught. He got a lot of love from the Villa fans when he first signed but is struggling to cope with the bile hurled at him now.

Needs to go to the new manager's office as soon as he arrives to hand over the captain's armband. I'd sooner he gave it up than it be taken from him.

Anyone else notice him just turn around and walk back towards the centre after their first goal last night?

Not a scintilla of pain or disappointment on his face. Looked like he’d be more upset by forgetting to put the bins out. Not what you want from a captain.

Nice bloke, totally not captain material, but his getting picked week in week out is a big contributor to SG getting potted.

I don’t think he’s ever really proved himself consistently at this level, he’s an excellent Championship player who has not made the jump, and his starting every single match for us is emblematic of the meek acceptance of low standards at the club.

Some of the personal abuse aimed at him over the last few weeks has been uncalled for and out of order. He can do a job for us for the rest of the season but he is not a ball player and has to be used correctly. He clearly doesn’t like being captain but he does care and the weight of what’s been going on is clearly having a huge affect upon him.

Couldn't agree more.

That's the way I see it too. Should never have been made captain as was already struggling but that's on Gerrard not McGinn. Our next coach will take the captaincy back off him as one of his first actions no doubt and give it back to Mings. Simply needs to be playing further up the pitch or not at all.

Those throwing bile at him, including on these pages, have short memories.

He's been really excellent for us over a period of time and, like almost every other player this season, has "lost form"! For all of them to be playing badly at the same time says more about the system, set up, coaching and tactics than the individuals! He was a stand out player in the Championship, so the step up to the PL was logical....BUT....he's regularly been played out of position (too deep) and had the captaincy thrust upon him in an insensitive and clumsy way by a much lauded ex-player and Head Coach...and he struggles to cope with those two demands.
Removing the arm band from him may be demoralising personally and needs to be handled carefully, but playing him further forward would bring SJM back....imho.

Telling.
Percy from the Daily Telegraph said
"John McGinn replaced Mings as captain, but has at times seemed inhibited by the role. Gerrard had planned to drop the Scotland international for the visit of Chelsea on the Friday before the game, but changed his mind and named McGinn in his starting line-up.

McGinn played well against Chelsea, but he is one of a clutch of players Gerrard found himself accused of being too loyal to"
