Not using it as a defence as I think he needs to be left out but he has pretty much played non stop football for about two years now.

Aw, shame. Lots of midfielders ahve played far more games than he has. How's he going to cope if we ever do get into Europe and the latter stages of cups?

The teams playing in Europe regularly have a depth of squad that allows them to rest players ahead of big games.

Their better players still end up playing far more games/minutes than McGinn.

Yes, but they also get rested from time to give them some recovery time. If he’s been available he’s played pretty much every game for Villa and Scotland over the past 2-3 years and looks jaded to me.

I don't think he has ever really proved he can really do it consistently at PL level. As mentioned, good option from the bench.

That just doesn't stand up to any scrutiny whatsoever. McGinn is "getting a rest" every midweek when other players are playing midweek European games.

Last season McGinn played 3,092 minutes in the Premier League, and 90 minutes in the FA Cup. Bruno Fernandes played 3,120 minutes in the Premier League, and 520 in the Champions League.

McGinn does have more weight to carry I suppose, actually more in his backside than Bruno weighs altogether.

Last few games and he has been subbed so I don't think being captain means much. I am hopeful that Dendonker takes his place

That would all be valid if human beings were all physiologically and psychologically identical. To me he looks like a man who needs a break.

Does he not look to you a player whose lack of technique (i.e bum-shuffle) has been found-out?

I reckon he would be a different player once he has a month off.  Unfortunately, he is also preparing for the World Cup.  He has bought a new telly.

He's welcome to rest of the season off. If we're going to add "not fit enough" to "not good enough" he's even less use than I thought.

I’ve checked the dates and the captaincy announcement was on or around 27th July, so we only had the game against Rennes when he was officially captain. Is the captaincy weighing too heavy on his shoulders because he looks like he’s running in mud most of the time? What was his form and fitness like in the other pre-season games? Was he way off the pace in those games too?

I don’t think he’s captain material in a million years.  I’ve not seen him leading or coaching or coaxing or even talking to the players in one match.  He is someone that just needs to be allowed to play his game.  Terrible decision by the manager.

It is one of the strangest things for me, he really doesn't come across as captain material at all. He's a 'character', not a 'leader'.

I've noticed this a couple of times this year. Players have been pressing him, but standing off enough that he can't engage them physically. Forces him to turn/make a decision, instead of using his ample asset.

Has McGinn done a post match interview yet? I don’t recall one. I don’t even know if he wants to be captain. It certainly hasn’t elevated his game.

Don't remember seeing one. Konsa has stepped up a couple of times though.

Yes.  And doesn’t exactly look comfortable.

Given how much Mings DOES come across as a captain, it looks a really poorly judged decision by Gerrard.
