I do think Mings has been shit on to be honest, but I guess we will have to wait and see how McGinn takes to the role.

He will spend as much time on the bench as off it this season, as Chambers is a better player.

I also think he is a bit too divisive to be captain. Whilst many may appreciate his anti-tory rants, half the country and a large part of our fanbase don't. I think you need someone 1. mostly starting games. 2. Leader on the pitch. 3. Not controversial. Keep the headlines for the football skills.

Last good captain we had was probably Petrov. Not convinced McGinn should be a certain starter, but am hoping he is better with a more solid set of players behind him this season.

I thought he had a terrible season, not the only one. Unless he improves dramatically, I think he will be replaced.

Have never been a huge fan of Mings as a player (his unease on his right side is the cause of most of his errors) but thought he was solid in the main last season (his best by far for us in the top division). Smith made a ridiculous decision to drop him at a crucial time. Id always have rated Konsa a better defender but he had a horrible run of form towards the end of the season. Mings wasnt brilliant but solid in the main in a team of very inconsistent players throughout. Arguably the biggest underperformer from all the consistent starters was McGinn.

Very strange logic from Gerrard. I dont think McGinn is good enough frankly to play in a midfield three, passing is rubbish from deep and again very weak turning onto his right side facing our goal. Technically, Luiz, Ramsey and Sanson are all better footballers but McGinn does have a bit more bite about him than those three.

Id like to see him further up the pitch like for Scotland ideally but we already have Coutinho and Buendia getting in each other's way and also trying to fit a mix of Bailey, Ings, Watkins into a cohesive unit. Muddled.

On the evidence of the matches in Australia I'd have said he's a problem, mostly because he is so one-footed. The play slows or breaks down when he gets the ball as he often receives it with his back to opposition and has to manoeuvre himself into a position to use his left foot. I thought we looked way more fluid and attacking when the play went through Luiz and Sanson. If we want a stocky little wasp-in-a-bottle type player on the field, Buendia is a better bet.

Im unfortunately old enough to have lived through Thatcher and the country is still feeling the scars of her. But if you think this lot aren’t as right wing as her Governments your really not sitting up and taking notice. Horrendous benefit cuts, looking for their ‘war’ with working people by purposely antagonising the unions, privatising the school system, dismantling the NHS, the list is endless, but its for another thread.

Yeah, no disrespect to anyone in particular, the articulate right wingers on this forum contribute a hell of a lot, but the dodgy types often appear in the football threads.

On the money there - Buendia is a fiery little character in a similar vein to McGinn, just with the ability to make THAT pass. McGinn should be nowhere near that starting eleven on the basis of his performances the past couple of seasons, when we have better options that would make him second choice (at best).

I'll trust Gerrard's judgement for now, but if the argument for stripping Mings was that the captaincy hindered his game, what the fuck is it going to do to McGinn?! The second coming of Danny Drinkwater anyone??

Hopefully it works, but I can prempt the same error prone, frustrating displays this season as we have seen the past few. Only difference is that now Gerrard has made him captain, he will have to stick to his guns to save face. McGinn seemed undroppable before - he's pretty much etched in the Villa Park turf now.
