Jesus.

Who do we think we are? He may not have hit top form after returning from injury but he's been brilliant for us. Why are people so keen to look for scapegoats and peopel to move on after each poor result or run of games?

McGinn, Mings, Luiz, Konsa, Targett. All players that have been lauded and then vilified and suggested we should do better. How abotu giving them a chance. Look at what Targett is producing, look what Konsa is doing. See how good the others have been. We're not Champions League regulars, we're in our second season back in the Premier League.

It seems that a couple of poor performances can ruin a player on here, despite what potential they show and however many good performances they may have delivered before.

We're trying new things, players in different positions, let's see how it works, see how they develop before writing them off. McGinn is 26 and the best is yet to come.

Totally agree with you Drummond.

Too early to write him off, but the coaching staff need to play players to their strengths. I'm not sure SJM is being.

He showed for the ball more than any other midfielder, he worked his nuts off. Yes he made a few mistakes but I really think the criticism is unwarranted. He is trying to cover back as well as drive attacks.
The midfield does not look balanced, it actually looked better with Nakamba.

Agreed, he is making mistakes but when trying to do the right thing. That's across this rancid run, one of the few players to get a pass for me. Sanson's struggles maybe can be expected but Luiz was pretty much hiding v Spurs. McGinn was trying to cover all that. Thought he played some good passes down the left channel at times.

Just after Ollie scored, SJM banged in an overhead kick for Scotland!

Great goal for him, hope he takes some confidence from that back into the remaining Villa fixtures.

Like the Villa, John has come a very long way in a short space of time.  I can live with one of our own being all over the media for the right reasons.  There will be more people see that goal of John's against Austria than have ever seen him play live in his whole career.  It probably put twenty millions on his transfer value.

A timely reminder to Deano about Mcginn’s strengths when played in a more advanced position. He was talked about as one of the best players in the league at one stage.

Hopefully, if we can add the right players to our squad, Mcginn can go back to his old role and show everyone that he is still just as good as he used to be.

My guess is after our terrible defensive record last season Dean wanted to make sure it wasn't repeated and to his credit it hasn't. SJM has certainly played his part in us having one of the best defensive records in the league but in doing that we've lost his attacking side and goals. Maybe it was also seen as a safer bet this season with him coming back from a long term injury whereby he wouldn't have to be running up and down the pitch. Whatever the reason was/is, McGinn for me is a natural box to box midfielder and the sooner we get him doing that the better. By playing him in a defensive role we only get half the player.

If Jack is back next week, then I would be inclined to play Nakamba and Luiz against Fulham and push McGinn further forward - he will still run around like a blue-arsed fly and do the defensive side anyway, but we have definitely lost something with him holding further back.  He even said in his interview after the game last night that we have been playing him more defensively, let's get him back to where he can do some damage.

I agree with this. His threat going forwards has been nullified by being played deeper. I think Nakamba might be the key to helping McGinn get forward more and attack.

I said a while back we're missing the old McGinn when he plays deep. Like someone else said though, his work in that area has helped out the team and defence.
