When Grealish was dropping deeper JM had a lot more freedom to move about but with Jack playing a more forward role he has a more defensive roll.

Agree with these points I was watching SJM closely against Chelsea and I don’t think he actually had a quiet game as such - his tackling, ball retention and recycling were good and he made incisive runs. I just think he’s being asked to play in a way that frees jack up. It’s not a coincidence that he has gone ‘quiet’ at the same time jack has started getting headlines again.

The challenge is to make that system flexible, so that our apporach is less predictable for the oppo.

Yeah agreed it shouldn’t be such a straightforward trade off between them. Really we should be finding a way to combine jack being as threatening as he has been lately with SJM playing like he did in the first few games of the season. You’d think marvelous and luiz playing together is the key to that.

He's really gone off the boil recently.

Played out of position.

Only on BBC to tout him to “bigger” clubs.

Ran out of steam I think. Played a huge amount of club football over last year (remember he didn't have three month injury lay off like Jack) and one of the few key Scotland players who dosen't pull out of squads injured so he's played all those games.

Probably does need a breather. He's on 3 yellows so will get a one match ban soon anyway.

I absolutely love SJM but he is clearly struggling. With the games coming thick and fast over Christmas he'll have to be rested surely?

He's been out of form for weeks now. If he's not getting on to chances around the edge of the box, he's not adding a whole lot else.   You can see him busting a gut still, so the effort is there, it's just to very little effect.

I've been saying for the last couple of months he disappears in the second half, not half the player he was in normally a brilliant first half. Today despite his best efforts he really didn't turn up. Like everybody else, I can't understand why other then he's knackered. Whatever the reason, Dean needs to discover, address it and quickly.

I'm not sure why he should be knackered.  There are fewer games than in the Championship, and we're not in Europe.
